If I remember correctly - we still had our timeouts, and 2 minutes and 30 seconds left.

If we make it on 4th and 1 (higher percentage than a 42 yard field goal for our team) - we have 2:30 to try and make our lead even bigger. We have an opportunity to score a touchdown - and if we don't, statistically we move the ball closer and probably kick more like a 33-34 yard field goal with MUCH less time remaining.

If we fail 4th down, we have our timeouts and can stop the clock with a 3 and out, where our defense is playing lights out in the 2nd half.

It was a no brainer and Coach O fricked it up.

Thank god you aren't a coach. Have you seen the last 2 years against Auburn with their kicker? He has hit 9 fgs in a row against LSU and he has a big leg. It's not like LSU was able to run the ball with ease against Auburn. You saw what happened when LSU was on the goal line and Auburn absolutely demolished the line of scrimmage.

In case you haven’t noticed, running out of the I isn’t our strong point this year. We ran up the gut on third and short in the first half and got stuffed. If we get stuffed again there’s 2 minutes left and auburn just needs 1 or 2 first downs for the win. You go with the field goal

And we couldn’t have done that if we missed the kick? You’re an idiot.

I'm not hating, but I also thought we should have gone for it to make it a little easier on Culp. But that SOB came through in the clutch - twice.

The funny part is, had Culp missed the field goal and we lose - guarantee we would be seeing a ton of threads asking why we didn't go for it.

WA HAPPEN? I TOT COACH O SAID OUR KICKER SUCKS??? FIRE HIM!

I wanted to go for it as well, but I didn't trust our kicking game.. the coaches know better from what they have seen though.. Glad he made it.

The defense was playing lights out the second half and we did need the points.

I think a stupider decision was Gus not going for it on 4th and 1 around midfield. I feel like they would have absolutely gotten it..

I know what a play clock is. It was running down because Orgeron couldn't decide what to do in that situation.

You make a good point. We only needed 6” and had we got the first down Auburn would have had to start burning timeouts. I was okay with the call. Nothing is guaranteed with our offense, Auburn was tough to run on when they knew it was for sure coming, and Culp seems pretty damn accurate from inside the 45. Me personally if I was the coach I would have tried to convert the FG. But I agree OP you do have a valid point. I was in the stands and my gut was Culp was going to nail that FG. Sometimes I think a coach has to play it on their gut instinct and this time it worked out for us.
