The Volvo looks way better if you're not trying to look aggressive. More sleek and sophisticated, luxurious all around. My wife's going from a manual 5 series so she wasn't into a sporty ride at all, mainly because nothing was going to compare anyway. She wanted a plush ride with a REALLY nice interior with all the bells. Her 5 series was 2009, so she really wanted the wizbangery.

Your wife rather have a VOlvo than a Lexus?

Not a brand new one but had a rental a couple of years ago. Think i twas a 2013/214ish model yera? I'm not a fan of the CVT transmission. It felt like the transmission was really holding the car back.

My mom has drove two and the Infiniti version. She currently has a 17 Murano and likes it a lot. Never complained about them or her Maxima.

How ridiculous. The CVT is equal in performance to any conventional automatic transmission, maybe even a slight edge.

I have a 17 Murano. I think it is a great riding and driving car. Too new to comment on reliability, I've only had it a few months. Gas mileage doesn't seem quite as good as advertised, but again it's too new. Still in the mid 20s on the highway.

I liked it better than the comparable Infinity model.

It's not an Altima wagon either, the Rogue might be considered that but not the Murano.

edit -- checked the mileage yesterday on a 70-ish mile trip on the interstate, a little over 27 MPG going upwards of 80 at times.

We test drove one and we liked it a lot. However, we decided to go ahead and get a 3rd row because we plan on having more kids soon. Going with Pilot.

FYI: you can get a Pathfinder with 3rd row cheaper than a Murano.

If you don't need a 3rd row though, I'd look real hard at the new 2018 GMC Terrain

how is the gas mileage

No budget but why are you worrying about MPG? Usually the he vehicles that gets the better gas mileage are the the ones with the wimpy engines.. ie 2.0L turbo in a SUV.

3.5L 260hp 21/28mpg..

I agree but the performance perception is not there. People are used to the shifting as a measure of how fast they are accelerating.

The negative perception people have of no shift points has led Nissan to actually program shift points in their newer models.

I am on my sixth Altima (high mileage) and have never had any serious issues

The one I drove was OK off the line. Was fine when you gunned it at highway or moderate speeds. Was smooth when accelerating normally from a dead stop. When you were cruising at one speed and gave it a little gas to accelerate (like going from a 35mpg zone to a 55mph zone) the car felt like it didn't want to go anywhere. You had to give it more gas than you needed to get it to start to accelerate. This was ~2 years ago in a ~2 year old Murano at the time so I was guessing '13-14 model. Things could be different now but that was my takeaway then.

A lot of cars are like that now days. It is their attempt at getting as high mpgs as possible. Most cars have a sports mode that makes the downshifting quicker.

Assistant in my office bought a Murano a few months ago. She likes it alright but says she preferred her old Ford Edge she traded in.

Check out the redesigned 2017 Jeep Compass Limited. I've driven my wife's a few times and it is a pretty sporty ride for a 4 cyl. Go with the Limited package and it comes fairly well equipped.
