did not find a spoilers thread on it, so SIAP

Mixed feelings about the movie. Being based on a true story I know they prob had to follow a certain story line. My feelings are steered more towards the filming style. I get trying to make it feel more late 70's/early 80's, but still. Would have rather it been filmed for a more modern feel, while still keeping the same scenes and script. Also would have liked there to be more of a soundtrack in the background.

Positives:
1. Tom Cruise did a pretty good job
2. His wife, Lucy, was SMOKING hot
3. Entertaining

Negatives:
1. The Medellin Cartel. If yall have seen Narcos before watching this you will not be able to take Pablo seriously haha.
2. JB (Lucy's brother). I hope his character was forced solely because it's a true story. F that kid.
3. A little too long

Overall I give it a 6.8

I saw it last night. I have always thought flying was one of the coolest things you can do, so I really enjoyed it.

yeah their portrayal of the cartel was very interesting considering Narcos just covered this and most people saw a very different angle.

it was kind of a disconnect for me. i know its a true story but i couldnt help but wonder for most of the time was "why are they letting this guy get away with this shite...?"

eta: so at the end when the CIA decides to deal guns with the Iraqis, this is pretty much how the taliban got so many of its weapons right?

I thought it was okay. It was a fun movie, but there's just so much to cover to tell the full story that I think it's impossible to fit in two hours and still incorporate Barry's personality in it.

I wish HBO would do like a 3 or 4 season series on it.... And please include the time his son posted on the OT somehow.

I had the opportunity to see the movie twice and really enjoyed it.

I don't understand why they chose to show him being murdered in Arkansas rather than Baton Rouge as was the case.

Just watched it and hatttteeedd it

1.) they really went for a powderpuff version of the Barry seal story. There's so much political drama and entertaining parts they left on the table

2.) making Barry seal some sort of family man was fricking hilarious. Dude was a coke and whore addict. This movie made him out to be father of the year

3.) literally no character development. Barry never changes and no other character is given enough screen time to even get a sense of what character they are. I was laughing at the end when they gave a "where are they now" eulogy to the pilots that were in the movie for a whole 7 minutes like why would we give a frick where those characters went.

4.) everything about it was lazy and cheap. The voice over kind of explained plot holes that the actual movie stumbled over, almost like they made the movie and then added the voice over after wards. They added in some forced comedy and upbeat music to make you think you're having fun, when the actual scene has not been properly setup. They didn't even bother to update the cars a little. He died in the 90s but every car they showed was from the 1970s it felt like, as was everyone's clothes

Man that was such a missed oppurtunity for this movie to be fun. It could've been a wolf of wallstreet level crazy mixed in with some wild political drama, but they decided to make it a watered down lazy pieced together action movie that didn't have a lot of action. They even pussed out on the ending.

Finally got around to seeing this. Yeah, Tom Cruise may be nuts and made the Mummy this year, but I really think people shite on him too much because he tends to pick really good projects.

This just went down as an instant classic in my mind. Granted I haven't seen Narcos, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and cheered when the brother in law was rightfully killed. Can't wait to watch this again. Highly recommend it if you're into crime movies.

I will add that I was not familiar with the Barry Seal story beforehand and realize why many Baton Rogue people would be much more invested in it being told right. From a mostly outsiders perspective (haven't lived I LA since I was 3), I found it entertaining, but I can definitely see where they can make a fantastic series out of this guy's life.

This movie was like if John Hughes's less talented brother made a Wolf of Wall Street romantic comedy

Could have a top tier HBO budget 10 year series on this if you wanted , Arkansas politics and money run deep, our state forever only had 1-2 rich families, when the state grew things went down . Ask Hillary

No. Completely different groups of sand people in different countries, at different times, in different wars.

The brother in law was a made up character, I have no idea why they did that because it added nothing to the story.

The movie was OK but considering the subject could have been a lot better

I knew of the Barry Seal story, but didn't know details. Watched the movie, then did research. You just have to realize the they took a true story and made a fiction story based on it. There are some rumors and conspiracy theories around Seal because it is known he had CIA ties prior to his drug running, but apparently no released evidence. So to make it interesting, they made up a story of what they thought would be interesting if it were true. Once you realize thay, it's entertaining. Not groundbreaking, but entertaining.

Just keep in mind that almost all of the movie is fiction.

It's very very VERY loosely based on a true story.
