"Show Cause" Termination Policy

Can anyone please explain what the "Show Cause" language in a coaching contract is? My understanding is that its essentially legal jargon that allows the school to terminate a coach without paying the buyout IF said coach does something to tarnish the brand/name of the university... such as cheating on your wife with your assistant and crashing your motorcycle on a country road...
But, wouldn't there be more damage done to the university and its finances if say, I don't know, YOU LOSE TO frickING TROY?!?!?!?!

If you hire someone who is simply incapable of doing the job up to standards, you are still on the hook for paying a buyout as you made the decision to hire them.
If it were possible to avoid a buyout just because your coach is losing more than you'd like, there'd be a lot of coaches across the country without a job at the moment.

I would say it has to do with embarrassing the brand and performance cannot be considered a factor.

All of what was said above, plus, the last thing you want is for LSU to do something unethical. That could get nasty, and would do serious damage to LSU's ability to attract a top-notch coach.

Some type of minor infraction that would get the NCAA sniffing around might be sufficient to clean house with no buyout.

What if a coach did something clearly unethical and perhaps against SEC/NCAA rules, like, for example, letting a star player avoid a 3rd positive drug test by briefly leaving the team? Just for example, not that this really happened. But if it did, would that be enough "cause"?
