What kind of authority comes with that role? Anyone here ever served as one?

Hide e in the bathroom to avoid key votes because they don't want to piss of their constituents.

If your talking about council members in BR anyways.

There like state councilmen, just on a smaller scale.

In Alexandria they spend 90 percent of their time bitching about the white Mayor, then the other 10% worried about bringing in a Dollar General for economic development.

Or is that the Police Jury? Hell, it hard to keep straight.

I've considered running for city counsel (I live in a small town outside of Gainesville), and I looked into it...

12k a year.... it's a part-time gig, and you're required to attend 4 meetings a week, on average. I get that you can do that and a full-time gig at the same time, but doesn't seem worth it unless you have ulterior motives.

A city councilman represents a district within the city. They have to attend a monthly meeting, but they do have to deal with all the problems within their district and it is their responsibility to fix them.

Supposed to be a panel that takes on public issues and tries to resolve them with aid of the mayor and other city officials. Unfortunately, we're just paying them to be an audience to liberal stupidity.

I thought about this the other day: how can anyone with a traditional job serve as a council member? The meetings start at 3:30 to 4:00PM in Baton Rouge and occur twice a month. Maybe that's part of the reason we get what we have in office.

I work closely with the ones in my city. Basically they are the ones that decide on "major"-ish issues affecting the city and vote on things. No it's not just about trash pickup. Many of the issues ours vote on deal with land development and deciding on whether certain companies can build in our city. Technically each one represents their district within our city (they are voted by the public) but for the most post it is more large scale and city-centric rather than their district. They vote on contracts different departments in the city present. We have 2 council meetings a month, preceeded that same day by work sessions. They work very closely with the mayor.

It is "part time" in that they have other jobs but there's a good bit of time involved. Most of the time people just bitch at them and complain about stuff, it doesn't seem like a very cool job to me.
