The graph isn't clear on the 1920 number, but it looks to be around 150,000. The population of the United States in 1920 was 106.5 million, so about .001% of the population was incarcerated in 1920.
The number in 2014 looks to be about 2.4 million. The population of the United States in 2010 was 309.3 million. So, that's about .007% of the population.
Considering the amount of things you can go to jail for these days (i.e. drugs) it doesn't seem to be that huge of a jump to me.

Wow. That is a lot of drugs.

Pretty clear the crack epidemic and the subsequent war on drugs lead to the explosion.

The prison rates for black people and Hispanic people are the top two in the world and the rates for white people are tied for 9th highest in the world. I'd argue that there is a big problem with over-incarceration in the US.
It's a massive problem in my view.

Well, at least we are not a shite-hole.
I have been to shite-holes with much lower incarceration rates.
Stop dealing and using drugs, dopers. Go to work.

That and violent crime was way up starting in the 70's, all through the 80's until it reached its peak in 1991 (worst year on record).
One thing positive that happened under Bill Clinton's watch is that the murder rate declined steadily until he left office and continued to decline under GW and Obama.

Following the rules of mankind are hard

A 700% jump doesn't seem that big?
And clearly the bigger issue is the spike in the rate of increase around 1980. It would be one thing if that 700% increase happened in a pure linear trend, but virtually all of those gains occurred in the last 30-40 years. It sure seems significant

CIA funds rebels in Central America with guns in which the rebels give the CIA cocaine.
CIA flies cocaine into USA, turns it into crack, gives it to a guy named Rick Ross in LA.
Everybody wins!

Sounds like some whacked out front porch history revisionist theory.

More the later, and even if both, what led to the crack epidemic? It was the War on Drugs.

700% isn't a huge increase?

But, it really isn't.
Ever wonder why we're STILL in Afghanistan and why Afghanistan is producing more opium than ever before?

Does that correspond with single motherhood in the black community? I just assumed the first generation of kids growing up without dads we're starting to get arrested in the 80s

Oh yeah? I'd argue there are lots of people out there getting away with evil shite who are escaping punishment.
