Ran across an interesting, but relevant problem today studying for the PE.

What is the percent probability of a flood with a 100 year frequency occuring within 100 years?

A)100%
B)63%
C)37%
D)99%

Well, if it's 100 years, wouldn't there be a 1% chance each year? So, 100 years, 100%?

It's gonna be something like the % of one not occurring is .99. And that to the ^ 100 power is whatever and 1 minus that.

.99^100 would be the probability of it NOT occurring... which rounds to 37%.

100% - 37% = 63% chance that it does happen.

If its "within" 100 years or 99.999 years its with 99% certainty.

If its 100 years period. It's 100% or 1 every 100 years.
