Meant a couple hundred artillery troops, or a couple artillery battalions
Yes it's all been tried before. the killing has never been an issue though, just occupation.

Additional 4000 right? Even 4 SEAL or SF squadrons lead to an exponential increase in fire power when running FID rather than DA Ops. A couple hundred artillery battalions and to support them and its a lot of firepower IMO
We shouldn't be there and there is zero good outcome of this.

I was answering what 4000 troops could do, not whether they should be there.

Ah, gotcha.
Sorry.
Sorry.

$1 Trillion
20k casualties
Rinse repeat
Same pig in a new dress
No big deal at all

If accurate, the 4000 number leads me to believe it will be a BCT. I doubt SOF numbers are included.

The number might not include them, but they will be there. SOF will increase proportionally along with regular troops
I'm not trying to change your opinion on whether we should be there, I don't even have my own opinion set in stone right now. Just saying the extra troops will absolutely make a dent if the intended outcome is to kill rather than occupy

Right, I'm just saying they likely aren't included in the 4000.

its not
4000 was a pregame guess
Generals have carte blanche.

I have no idea.

16 SF/seals can train and lead hundreds of Afghan troops, including provide recon and intel.

Yeah, I just skipped over that.

What makes you say that?
Because every SOCOM assets can and has. It's SFs speciality while SEALS are more Direct action but they all do both.

FID (Foreign Internal Defense)

FID involves military deployment of counter-insurgency specialists. According to the US doctrinal manual, those specialists preferably do not themselves fight the insurgents.[1] Doctrine calls for a close working relationship between the HN government and security forces

Foreign Internal Defense: Training Allies
Training and assisting foreign counterparts to increase their capacity to respond to threats.

You are wasting an asset if SEALS are leading an Afghan light infantry battalion.

Why use SEALs when we have people custom built for that mission?

If I made it sound like seals leading a charge with a bunch of rebels behind them I apologize. It's more leading from the rear and supporting them
But I disagree about it being a waste. It can turn a bunch of locals into a functioning force. They are trained by SOF, missions are planned and directed by SOF, and SOF support them while trying to stay out of the combat directly. Sometimes they can get involved
This is not the SEALS specialty but it is a role. It's SFs specialty
It can turn 16 guns into 100 while also not costing American lives.
Delta get the most involved. They are out there running and gunning with the locals regularly
