Why do we refer to a segment of our population this way? It's divisive. I am referred to as "White" - no biggie. What's wrong with "Black?"
Fact - there is no such thing as a white Black person.
Fact - there are many, many white African - Americans.

Not meant to create strife...just an honest question.
When will we ALL be considered Americans?

I don't think most think there is. I hear "black" used to refer to people all the time.

You've obviously given this a lot of thought. What do you call Asian Americans?

I was working in Accra, Ghana about 10 years ago and during my stay there I was invited to have dinner at his home with the Chairman of the largest commercial bank in Ghana. (He was black, of course.)

During the dinner he asked me why American blacks preferred being known as "African Americans"?

I told him I had never asked why but I supposed it was a way of honoring their heritage.

He thought about that for a minute then said, "If I should ever emmigrate to the United States I would be very happy to simply be known as an American."

True story....

Just think what a jackass you'd look like if you called a black person from South America who's immigrated to this country an African American.

Because it replaced less savory terms like "negro," "colored," etc., at a time when folks wanted to be able to trace their roots to somewhere specific (difficult to so with the slave trade of course).

Look up the etymology of the term.

Nothing is wrong with black. It's a description based on factual skin color.

I have always refused to use the term "African-American". I will say "Black" or "Black American".

Would a Moroccan be allowed to be called an African-American if they moved here? They are more African than any black person that was born here.

Black people are fine with being called black people. You're inventing shite to get outraged about.

Most black people I've meet seem to prefer black to african american but aren't offended by either.

I'd call myself euro american but do I really want to self identify with those euro cucks?
