UT Fans - Chris Simms?

What are your overall thoughts about Chris Simms' legacy at Texas? Wasn't he the No. 1 recruit who turned down Tennessee to go to Texas?
Pretty good? Sucked? Overrated? Meh? Serviceable?

Not a Texas fan but Major Applewhite was the better of the two and it wasn't even close. Major got screwed.

This. Simms lit up inferior opponents but saved his worst for the biggest games. Major was the opposite.
Had Major played the whole game, Texas would've beaten Colorado in the 2001 conference championship and then played for a NC. He almost led them back anyway.

Simms led Texas to 9 win seasons at worst believe? This was in the days of 11 game seasons, so not bad.
He had his way with aggy. Overall, seemed like damn good qb when he didn't play OU, and he melted down against Colorado in the 2001 Big 12 CG with a trip to the natty on the line.

I grew up a Longhorn fan then went to LSU. At the time of the Major screwing, I rooted for LSU and UT. But after Mack stuck it in Major, UT was dead to me.

Simms never became a star his HS ranking projected but he is also unfairly trashed by many. People forget Applewhite tore his ACL in the Cotton Bowl after the 99 season. His stats are pretty similar to Applewhite though he threw 3 more ints in fewer passes.
To the Texas fan saying Simms played his worst in big games and Major was the opposite. Simms had some stinkers in big games obviously the CU CCG in 01. But check Majors stats vs Nebraska in the 99 CCG and also did MA get sick and stunk up the place vs A&M in the bonfire game and it was Simms that lead comevoin the 2nd half and almost won?

It seems like Friday Night Lights (tv show) patterned the Matt Saracen/JD McCoy dynamic after Applewhite and Simms

2001 big12 title game...
When LSU/Tennessee would go to commercials I'd switch to that game. Colorado dominated until Mack finally put Major in. Poor guy got boned (but apparently returned the favor years later if you know what I'm saying )

Applewhite was sick and Simms started. It was actually A&M that came back and then won the game. Applewhite came in the 4th quarter after Simms struggled quite a bit in the second half.
Neither really played that well

Yes. He was in the class Tennessee signed the February after winning the MNC but decommitted in the last week before NSD after having been committed for about a year iirc.
Cutcliffe taking the Ole Miss job had a bigger impact than revisionist history would lead you to believe. Tennessee also had Tee Martin back for another year and Casey Clausen committed in the next class.
Tennessee did end up signing his little brother though a decade later.

Haha that's right Simms started and they were up 16-0 and lost 20-16 Applewhite played in the 2 NFL half.
I get the hate for Simms to a degree since he was a giant douche but the Applewhite love was a bit much. He never won jack but is this beloved guy meanwhile James Brown won back to back conference titles and you never about him

Major had some bonehead games himself but showed up bigly when needed.
The '98 season, including beating Nebraska on Major's willpower alone, launched the program under Mack. He got rewarded with the bench when Simms showed up.

Pretty big arm. Not terribly accurate. I remember a major flaw of his was "locking in" on one particular receiver before even taking the snap and he'd try and muscle the ball in there (particularly on slant and post routes). A lot of those were batted away or intercepted.

No, Simms committed in late October 1998 after he officially visited Tennessee for the Alabama game. The problem is that he left UT high and dry a week before signing day. His commitment likely cost us Ken Dorsey, who was also at the Bama game on an unofficial visit. When Simms committed, UT told Dorsey to look elsewhere, by the time Simms switched to Texas, Dorsey was committed to Miami.

I agree Simms was 'douchy', but still a damn good qb. Unfortunately, he's known for having Roy Williams go Superman on his arse in 2001. If I recall, the only reason they were pinned back inside their own 5 was because Nathan Vasher fair caught a punt way back there.
Simms was screwed in one way...any big wins he had (aggy, LSU, Nebraska in Lincoln, KSU in Manhattan, Colorado, etc) were discredited. UT was 'supposed' to win those.
James Brown also gets no love within that program. He was a dude with a knack for the big game.
