I would like to buy a pistol to shoot at an indoor range for a hobby and carry in my vehicle for my personal protection.
I've never had anyone to teach me so i would like for someone to point me in the right direction on where to go that will teach the ins and out of carrying a handgun. (safety, cleaning, permit, etc)
thanks in advance and sorry for my ignorance on them.

Where are you located?

Go to a local range. Ask if they have an instructor. I'm sure all indoor ranges rent aswell.

Go to your local range, ask to rent a hi-point.

Get a S&W Shield 9mm and take it shooting. It is one of the most loved concealed carry guns and it is affordable. That is my quick advice.

Glock G19 (Just a suggestion, there are a ton of guns out there that will do what you need)

Go have some fun. The more time you spend with a firearm, and the more you know about it and how it functions the more confident you will be with it.

What is your level of firearm experience?
I think it's very wise of you to seek out some training too to make sure you don't have any incidents with your handgun purchase.
I tell this to anyone I instruct - the best first gun for virtually anyone is a full or mid sized 9mm from a respected manufacturer. I have yet to find a person who has been unable to shoot some variation of full sized 9mm.
I would also advise you learn how to shoot on a full sized handgun first before you decide to carry. Most carry guns are a bit smaller than full sized guns and can be harder to shoot, so they aren't an ideal starting point. Plus if you have a significant other that you would want to learn to shoot as well, a full sized gun will work for both of you.

The fact that you are asking before purchasing shows that you are 100% more intelligent in this area than people who have no handgun experience and just go out and buy one. Gathering information is the first step in ensuring your personal protection in every situation.

Are you planning to conceal carry this on you often?

Get a Glock 19. Should be everyone's first pistol.

For a novice concerned with personal defense that is just getting started I would go with a revolver to start. If you have a bad round all it takes is another trigger squeeze to get a new round. With semi-automatics there are misfires, stovepipes and other jams. Under pressure most will not be able to correct the problem.
As far as target shooting both revolver and semi-automatic are fun to shoot.
If you enjoy shooting you will end up buying a semi-automatic and can give the revolver to your spouse.
IMO caliber isnt that important, its where you aim. The larger the caliber the more likely you will get off target if shooting in rapid succession.
It sounds like you are going to be a responsible gun owner and it is a fun hobby. Just remember the most important rules, finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire and never point the gun at anything your not ready to destroy.
