So half of all US citizens live in liberal cities. How can there be such a disconnect between rural and urban America?

What is it about Urban America that makes people more liberal and vice versa?

A lot of those counties are 'barely' urban, such as Eastern Washington (I assume Spokane) or some of the random ones such as South Texas.

I get it. Louisiana doesn't have counties hence none being shaded

People live in bubbles. They surround themselves with like minded people.

Plus people that are raised in cities tend to stay in cities, while people raised in rural areas tend to stay in rural areas.

It's not "urban America makes people liberal", its more certain people enjoy living the urban lifestyle, and those people tend to lean more liberal.

Plus you have the minority demographics, which also tend to lean democrat (not so much liberal).

More diverse areas are usually more liberal. They have no choice but to be tolerant of others beliefs, religion, race, etc. People in smaller towns are closer knit and more likely to not want change or outsiders. They feel threatened. Both of them are credulous to different things. Neither are better.

Spend some time in a big city and your mindset will become slightly more liberal. Vice versa for rural America. Being surrounded by millions of people in close quarters tends to make one wish for more oversight and control.

It's like little cysts of infection that the country tries to wall off to limit the harmful effects.

The disconnect seems to have been more exteme than usual, but I think these red/blue maps make this disconnect more exteme because of the population density and the binary representation of a variable that had a lot of variability.

For example, I live in one of those counties, and both Obama (2012) and Hillary got about 60% of the vote. So if I come across 10 voters from my County, I'll be expected to meet about 6 people who voted for Obama, as opposed to about 5 nationally.

Being around so many people. There is a bigger perceived need for government.

I see Collin and Williamson counties in TX. Hardly liberal.. just a quick glance at the map I'm sure there are others.

You sure that map is correct?

Texas voting map

Dallas county is a liberal shithole, but white flight is moving to Collin County. Collin County will actually be larger than Dallas County in population very soon.

Tarrant County will never be fricking Liberal.

Poverty
Minorities
Federal employees
The 18-30 crowd

All concentrate in large urban centers and all tend to skew heavily democrat on Election Day (as a gross generalization).

This is why liberals trying to act like conservatives live in echo chambers is so fricking funny.

Conservatives can avoid hearing liberal ideas in precisely one way.

If they NEVER turn on their TVs, go to the movies or hell, even go outside because even in typically conservative counties, as we saw from the map posted the other day, you have about 30% liberals.

But liberals on the other hand live in fricking liberal stepford enclaves. This is why they will happily pontificate in crowds of people they don't know well with the full expectation that the crowd will agree with them.

For a large number of liberals, bumping in to a conservative idea during the course of their day REQUIRES actively seeking it.
