Was this in some way caused by over use or bad technique or was is something that just happens to some athletes? In other words, could it have been prevented?
No one is really sure what causes UCL tears specifically. Obviously, the overhand throwing motion puts stress on the ligament. Microtears happen with every throw (pitcher or not) and the body repairs much like a muscle. Some people can blame technique... some blame specific pitches... some blame early development (he threw over 100 innings in high school his junior year)... some blame year round baseball... There's no set proof for anything though. IMO, it's a combination of the biology of the specific player, over use, and pitch/technique.

Ell is spot on with his answer. In today's age TJ isn't as big of a career killer as it use to be. If this was a shoulder laburm then we would have some real concerns.

He should have never pitched in the CWS
That outing isn't when this happened. It had nothing to do with his current situation.

He should of had a MRI earlier.
Why? It wouldn't have prevented it.

And this would have prevented him from having to have surgery? You think if he wouldn't have pitched that the ligament would have just fixed itself??

This literally put a lump in my throat. I feel so bad for Eric. I had the pleasure of meeting his mom on a flight his senior year and she told me how much Eric loved Lsu and never wanted to play for anyone but the Tigers!
Prayers for a speedy recovery Mr Walker!
I hope to see you again on the mound winning championships for Lsu!

Son of a bitch. I guess Hess will be forced to be a starter for sure now

Is this completely unrelated to his forearm soreness and just bad luck?

Or did it already happen before the game which was why he was sore and we pitched him not knowing it?
Related. It's not a complete tear. It wasn't a "pop". We pitched him not realizing the severity. And it was likely already needing surgery prior to the start in the CWS.

I realize in hindsight it's much different and soreness and tightness happens a lot to pitchers but I can't help but to wonder why we couldn't have been more cautious and got an MRI or an x-ray or something to figure this out before we pitched him on the CWS game

How exactly????

What do you mean? His constant mismanagement of pitchers throughout the whole CWS cost the team big. How is it out of the realm to think he mismanaged Walker too?

He was going to be a starter no matter what.

Yeah I'm sure Paul just went rogue on this decision to put Walker in danger without the input of Walker or the training staff. Seems like the most obvious option and not that it's a terribly unfortunate injury that no one could have expected.

Ligaments heal extremely slow if they heal at all.

Because making the wrong pitcher choice during a game =/= causing a stress injury to manifest itself.

Jesus christ. This is too dumb to even properly address how dumb it is. Stop posting.

Hess
Peterson
Gilbert
Bush

IMO, these are the returners who will get starts next year at some point along with at least 1 freshman, maybe 2.

What the hell are you talking about? We made it to the CWS finals in case you forgot. Damn some people just can't help but blame the coaches for every fricking thing possible.

And we'd still be in the exact same situation! He wasn't handled incorrectly!

I'm not talking about a tear that causes a separation.

Calm down, no one is saying Paul went rogue. His incompetence of not being in tune with his pitchers across the board is what I am talking about. I am not saying he caused the injury, but one has to think that due to his mismanagement of other pitchers that he isn't managing them all properly.

He "mismanaged" a decimated pitching staff into the cws finals. What happened with Walker is unfortunate but if there was any indication this would be the end result you really think the training staff or mainieri would've thrown him?

They don't heal. That was my whole point of asking the question. If Walker wouldn't have pitched in that CWS game then he would STILL be out next season. It might not have been discovered as soon, but not pitching him doesn't mean that he would have healed and would have never been injured. It would have happened over the summer (if he threw) or during fall practice, when he started throwing again.
