a lot of the time, it's just not worth the time. And in the end, costs them less, by not having to load up on court cases and lawyer fees.

I've seen two people in the last several months steal TVs from Walmart and the workers not call the cops after the shoplifters got to the parking lot.

Anyone else think it sounds like this dude works at Wal-Mart and doesn't want to be the guy that calls the cops? Came to the OT to make himself feel like less of a snitch for doing his job?

All of the employees are busy in customer service seminars.

Corporate policy is very strict on what loss prevention can and cannot do. Too many injuries and deaths. Once the thief makes it beyond the front sidewalk the "pursuit" is done. Beyond that, some police departments will follow and and others won't.

My guess is the amount lost to the shoplifter isn't worth the time and trouble of pursuing it.

When you're a company as big as Wal-mart , everything about you is huge, even your losses from shoplifting.

The retailing giant says that it loses about $3 billion every year from theft, or 1% of its $300 billion in revenue, Reuters reports.

Same reason we don't call the cops on your shitty threads. We have better things to do.

It depends what kind of security the store has. A lot of Wal-Marts and Targets just hire a couple of guys as security that walk around in plain clothes and sometimes watch cameras to try and catch people. Those are the guys who can't chase you once you're outside. Also, if they catch you inside, they can only apprehend you and call the police and wait for them to come, if the store is going to press charges and have the offender arrested

Then, there's the stores that have sheriffs outside of them. They usually also hire the guys to work inside, but they usually radio the cops if the offender makes it outside with something of value.

Finally, the reason most stores don't do more about it is because of some kind of theft insurance. They get the goods replaced by insurance. This is also a reason why some cost go up. It's to cover the goods stores know will be stolen.

True, but pursuing individual cases might not be cost effective. A shoplifter might make off with a tube of lipstick or a pair of jeans. The cost in terms of employee time (file a police report, pull the security footage, testify in court) will be more than the value of the item.

They do. I have a really stupid cousin that's tried to steal tvs twice and each time she's been arrested on the spot in the parking lot.

It's a damn shame people are so poor that they got to shoplift from Walmart. Trashy fricking people.

It's not even shoplifting until they leave the store. If they confront them while they're still inside then it can't be called stealing because they can always say they were going to to pay for before they left. Everyone knows it's a lie but it's still a legal technicality.
It used to be that way. Times have changed in many cities/states. There are laws that can bust you for shoplifting before you get out the door.

False, in Louisiana. And I know of one Walmart near Nola that does indeed call the police.

That's why I don't shop at Walmarks. We're a Target family. If I have to pay a few cents more for a few things, I consider it a premium to not have to deal with riffraff.

7 downvotes? I didn't know there were so many Walmarks loyalists. Honestly I'm glad there are though. Hopefully you'll all stay there and keep the others with you. Calandros, Rouses, and even Target send their regards.
