Why does Chris Paul always make the All-Defensive 1st Team?

Dude has made it 7 times in a row.

Patrick Beverley
Chris Paul
Kawhi Leonard
Draymond Green
Rudy Gobert

I have never once feared Chris Paul on the defensive end as a fan. All the other guys on this list clearly make it more difficult for teams to execute on offense.

Is the answer really just that Paul takes bad risks to rack up steals?

Because he's that good on defense . The dude almost had a quadruple double with steals against the clippers when he played for the hornets. You don't get that many steals just taking chances.

The #1 responsibility isn't block shots or getting steals. The #1 responsibility on defense is not letting the offense do what it wants to do. Chris Paul is great at frustrating offenses. It just doesn't show up as obvious on TV as a dunk or block.

He's an elite defender. Sure he might get crossed the hell up by Curry, but he's still a very elite defender.

Didn't realize he had that long of a streak going. Impressive.

As unreliable as they can be he's consistently been near the top of the list for defensive impact stats (drpm, on/off, bpm, etc.) among guards.

And it's not like he's just gambling to pick up a bunch of steals. He has incredibly quick hands and anticipation and his stout build and quick feet allow him to even match up against bigger guys sometimes.
