I'm calling such bullshite on this most places are smoke free now without bans
This was roughly 10 years ago prior to a ban being put in place where I used to live. Where I currently am has had a ban since I moved here, so I can't comment on how it prior to the ban here.
I will say this. I have friends that smoke and I have never, not once, heard one of them bitch about having to walk 20 feet to a patio to smoke when we are out.

I also freely went to a Starbucks earlier. Should you have the right to smoke there? Airports? Book stores? Should we go back to the 1960s?
Back to point A again.
If Starbucks openly advertised that they were a smoking coffee shop, I would be perfectly fine with them allowing it.
Believe me there are plenty of coffee options around

The results would've be similar without the ban. You missed out on a golden egg buisness opportunity if that is true

And I know people that make their bar decisions 100 percent on whether they are allowed to smoke or not. Doesn't mean anything.

No, no you wouldn't.
The first time some baw blew smoke near your coffee or bagel, you'd shite

Yes I would. Who am I to tell the coffee shop owner that he can't try to appeal to a certain demographic?
If I didn't want smoke in my bagel, I would choose to go into a different coffee shop.

You have confused my argument again. I am not saying that EVERY bar should be smoking.
But every bar should have the right to CHOOSE to be smoking and non smoking
No one will force you to be around smoke, no one is advocating that smoke should be allowed everywhere

Ok, I can see that in places that don't have a ban, but if their was one in place are these people going forgo going to a bar at all?
And as far as the business side goes, it seems to me that a ban on smoking indoors while allowing it to take place on a balcony/patio would be of great benefit to all bar owners. I would bet that having to make that 20 foot walk is not so great a hinderance that smokers are going to stop going a particular bar (when all bars are the same regarding smoking), while the owner gets all the business from the non-smokers that he otherwise wouldn't due to not wanting to be in a smoke filled room.

Going from college bars that allowed it to mid 20s bars that didn't opened my eyes.
San Diego Yard House and Gas Lamp District 2007. Walked into a PACKED Thursday happy hour crowd and all you could smell was the kitchen. It was GLORIOUS.
What sucked was that you were in beautiful San Diego where you would want to be outside, but the smokers were all on the patios. Never did I argue that they should not be allowed there. Just a little price to pay for the smoke free indoors.

Someone who realizes that smoking is a public health hazard?

There's a lot of anger coming from the smoking side in this thread.
A lot of the people against the ban don't even smoke. They just don't like the idea of government overreach.

I respect that, but I've also spent too much time on poli talk to think most aren't full of shite.

This is absolutely true and I feel the exact same way.

You don't have the right because you don't own Starbucks.
And yes to all your other questions.
This isn't a hard concept to grasp.

Most places with worthwhile patios aren't frequented by smokers so it ends up being OK.

Yes. There are plenty of people who don't like drinking unless they are also smoking. And vice versa.

Why can't he decide that for himself? Aren't they adults and smart business owners?
No one is making them allow smoking, the market will eventually dictate that they should ban smoking outside of a niche market. It's an overregulation that isn't needed.

Your argument is faulty because it glosses over the fact that smoking is a public health hazard.

Everyone who comes into that shop, accepts those public health hazards. Why can't grown ups make decisions for themselves anymore?

Not in Oxford, but it's a small college town. It's pretty smoke free until about 9-10 at night. Then when the college kids show up the patios are pretty much nothing but people sitting around drinking and smoking.
