Since the early 1700s, which political ideology has been most responsible & necessary in the building of our nation?

Don't use Republicans & Democrats, because those groups have changed places at least once...and maybe more.

The modern American state has almost little to do with classical liberalism and hasn't since the end of WW2. I would say Straussian politics has been the dominant philosophy over the past 70 years. It accounts for the belief in American imperialism, neoconservatism and the accountability gap between the elites and those who are ruled.

Both, but in different ways. Neither side is without blame. That's why a 3rd party is such a huge need. Unfortunately, the two parties are too powerful to allow it. Unless Trump can bring it all crashing down at one time.

I agree that classic liberalism most accurately describes the dominant philosophy in shaping the USA but there is little doubt that we've seen a significant pivot away from that in the last century. Not sure when you would say the first main pivot occurred - maybe the New Deal? The New Deal's form of liberalism didn't look much like classic liberalism and I don't think we've ever really fully returned to it since then. We've had periods of returning to a watered down version of it from time to time I guess. Regardless classic liberalism may have been most responsible for the making of the USA, but it's influence is not nearly as strong now and we are being made into something else now.
