Grand Isle Surf Fishing Questions

Looking to head out there Saturday morning. I haven't been out to fish the surf since I was a kid. Should I head to Elmer's Island? Also, since you can no longer park on the beach, can you just park on the road? Any advice is helpful! Thanks!!

Someone mentioned to me that you can no longer drive on the beach.

You can drive pretty much to the beach and park. No driving on beach

There's a big parking area where the Elmer's Island road hits the beach, but you'll have to walk about a mile or so down the beach to get all the way to the point at Caminada Pass. Better bring a wagon or something to tote your gear and fish. You can start fishing at the parking area and work your way to the point.

Just look for the marks in the sand where his truck nits are dragging from the weight of that F250.
Do all F250's come in 4x4 so they don't constantly get stuck?

For some reason, the idea of surf fishing has begun to appeal to me more and more the last several years. I have only done it a handful of times, but I would like to get more into it.
I wish there were a good summary thread or article about the best times of the year, tactics, camping options, etc.
I have been able to gather that the surf fishing for specks gets good about now, early to middle of May. And stays good through the summer. Unfortunately that's the hottest time of the year and the least enjoyable to be camping on Grand Isle.
I appreciate all the info people have shared here.

The beach usually has a breeze and it's really not bad if your tent has good air flow. I have been camping at the state park a few times each summer the past 4 years.

Surf fishing GI May through July is my favorite type of fishing. They action was real good last Saturday. All 18-22" trout with no throw backs. Wind and tide are the two biggest factors.

I've never had much luck in the afternoons. Maybe catch a few, but it was never anything like the morning bite. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. Anyone have any tips for afternoon surf fishing?

The few times I've had afternoon luck was when schools of shrimps would pass by. If I see bunch of birds working towards the camp, I'll go make some cast. Other than that, early morning is the best. Don't go into water until about 30 mins after sun is up. Fish close at first.

From what i remember, the GI beach has those rock jetties all along it. Do you guys just fish between the jetties? Or do you just stay on GI and fish over at Elmer's? Is there a big difference between the fishing on Elmer's and at GI?

Yup, I caught all my fish last weekend between 1030 am and noon. Than went back out 3pm-5pm. Caught just a few more in the morning than the afternoon. It's all in the conditions, just like fishing trout anywhere you want clean water. If the water is poo poo I don't even waste my time.

Only half the island has jetties. I grew up surf fishing down there before the jetties so I'll fish with or without. The jetties are easier to fish doe.

I've always had better luck in the mornings, but the afternoons are usually pretty good too. Like someone else said, it depends on the conditions more than anything else. Clean water and make sure there is bait around
