They're round and go under the gutter.

Ok, just spoke with the guy that doesn't use the wedges and he clarified saying that there will be "more than enough" support because of the way he designed the bend in the back and also the hangers he uses and longer screws. He also mentioned that the the screws that are normally used in the wedges are too short and create a stress point and eventually come loose and sag over time. He's done plenty of house in River Ranch and on Settlers Trace and has never had a problem in the last 10 years that he has began using this design.
