Haven't been to the one in Frankfurt, but the Christmas markets in general are interesting/fun. Very convivial atmosphere, with a happy vibe. Lots of drinking, eating, some light shopping (handicrafts, simple traditional gifts, sweets, etc), and people milling around, enjoying themselves. I did a spur of the moment Christkindlmarkt trip to Munich & Salzburg a couple years ago, and it was magical...snow, Christmas carols, Krampus run, singing, huge decorated trees, lots of lights at night....and mulled wine everywhere.

No experience, but I've heard great things about the one in Vienna. Just go. Those 700/800 direct flights from New Orleans are a good deal. Maybe fly in there and go over to Munich or Salzburg.

Frankfurt's is OK, but not special. I'd recommend Strausbourg (French town on German border... but it has been part of France and Germany several times), Munich, and Salzburg. My favorite one is actually in a small town in the German wine valley called Deidesheim. I probably wouldn't fly all the way to Germany just for a Christmas market, though.
