You can't compare boat ownership with kayak ownership. I've had an ascend for almost 3 years and I haven't put one cent into it. Not one. No fuel costs, no repairs, no upgrades and despite me getting really tired of paddling into the wind and trying to keep positioned while I spot a nice red, it's a perfectly fine fishing rig. I'm just getting older and those long paddles back to the launch after fighting the wind and finicky reds is really getting old.

To me, this is like saying it's ridiculous to spend $2500 on a fully rigged out compound bow because for that much you could buy a top end rifle. Sure, they accomplish the same end goal of killing a deer, but they're for different applications and different experiences.

Excellent analogy, I hear the same thing all the time and this is a good response.

Everyone tends to stereotype kayak fisherman as people who can't afford boats and are fishing out of kayaks to save money. They just can't grasp the concept that many of us simply just enjoy fishing out of a kayak more than a boat.

I fish out of my boat way more than my yak. I went twice this weekend in my yak and enjoyed the hell out of it other than the part where I left my Slayer seat at home Friday.

My back is still stiff.

Sorry. Didn't mean to offend I chose poor language. If I'm not gonna paddle and lug a heavy arse kayak by myself I'd rather have a little jon boat or skiff with a trolling motor is all I was saying.

I have both a kayak and a flat back canoe with a 2.5hp and a trolling motor up front. Both fit in the bed of my truck and I can use either one solo. I use the canoe more now, but the kayak has definite advantages in certain situations, particularly moving water and small ponds. And for quick trips there is just less stuff to worry about on the yak.

That being said, having the option to motor somewhere has really opened up some new horizons for me.

Not to mention once I started fishing out of a kayak I became an overall much better fisherman. You realize there are literally fish EVERYWHERE in south Louisiana. You don't have to go far to catch a limit of trout and reds.
Friends I have who only fish out of boats, get amazed when I take them kayak fishing at just how close to a launch you can catch fish.

yeah, i have a buddy who has a bay boat and i go with him on occasion and as soon as we leave the launch he puts the hammer down and it's at least a 15 minute drive to catch reds. I tell him all the time they're everywhere.

Rep I spoke to yesterday said the first shipment will leave the warehouse on May 8th, but that the first shipments will be to fulfill preorders. So I'd expect late may, June for any stores to start getting them. Demos may hit the stores in may

That was me on saturday at the show. The may 8th ship date isn't sent in stone, but that is the anticipated date. The advantages this propel system with have over other propels and the outback is you will be able to go faster in shallow water for one. It has automatic reverse. The prop can be adjusted for different heights and it has 3 blades instead of 2 so you should be able to get more torque. Also the prop will automatically kick up if it hits something hard so it won't damage the prop. You can leave it in the yak when transporting and if you want to paddle instead of use your legs, you don't have to pull it out of the hole. It is also made from 3D printing so there is less moving parts and zero bolts, screws, etc that can be a pain in the arse if they fail in the marsh and you don't have tools.

I plan on giving my Outback to my son and get the Jackson Flex Drive. I'll wait a year though to hear reviews first.

The good news is almost any kayak will fit those needs. At this point ask yourself if you want a sit on top or sit inside. Looking around on craigslist is definitely a good option for used kayaks. Might also be worth calling in to Massey's on Carrollton, Dave is the boat buyer and has used demo boats on sale depending on time of the year. Good crew working that store too.

Did he say anything about getting the kinks worked out in the Flex drive? the report I heard back in October was that it still had a major point or two to fix up.

Just stumbled across this option:
Hurricane Skimmer 120 Propel - $2600.

Looks like they teamed up with Native Watercraft for this kayak given the Propel drive and the "First Class" seat. The best part is, it only weighs 59lbs! That's incredible for a pedal kayak. Definitely worth a look.

I think it's the same boat as the Slayer 12 LT.

It is the same boat, just different brand names. That one and the Jackson interest me the most of the new pedal drive boats, Pack and Paddle said they probably won't stock that LT model though.

You are correct, Legacy Paddlesports and Hurricane Kayaks merged. Legacy consists of brands Native and Liquid Logic. They are one in the same now.

It's still an option and people need to know about it.
