LSU was very much still alive for the NC

No. Ole Miss loss did LSU in. Even if LSU had gone to the Cotton and beaten Texas, its highly unlikely LSU would have gone from #8 to #1. Most likely Southern Cal or Penn State would have gotten the AP title.

It's complicated. You got the basics, although I disagree with having many bowl options. Back then conferences didn't orchestrate the bowl match ups. They were negotiated between the bowls and the teams themselves.

Prior to ND coming into the picture, LSU wanted the Cotton and the Cotton wanted LSU. The Sugar made arrangements to take the team that beat us, Ole Miss. When ND made their decision late in the process, the Cotton jumped on it (from a business perspective can't blame them as it was quite the coup) and LSU didn't have many options.

I believe they could have gone to the Peach Bowl, but we had played in the inaugural game the prior year and it just wasn't that appealing to return. They may have had another unappealing option, but McClendon was butt hurt (understandable) and convinced the team to vote to protest by not accepting any bowl invitation (a mistake imo, but as I said understandable).

As far as ranking goes, this was a team that needed to go undefeated and have have a significant bowl victory to get the respect it deserved. Take a look at the schedule; it was pretty weak. The signature win was a 1 pt home victory against Auburn (14th ranked at the time 20th final). The only other win over a team with a winning record was a 5 pt home victory against Alabama (6-5 final record).

Texas wanted no part of LSU in the Cotton Bowl, having been shut out in their previous bowl game with LSU, and plead with Notre Dame to end their self-imposed bowl ban to play them in the Cotton.

The University of Texas was not just sitting passively, waiting for their opponent to be picked for the premier sporting event in their state.

Curious as to why the score was so low in this one? Just really solid Defense? or was the weather a big factor?

On another note, I'll be in Sydney for Vivid Sydney at the end of May. Be sure to order good weather for me, mate!

That's awesome mate, we are getting the bad weather out of the way for vivid now

A description of the game:

quote:

The score indicated a victory for fourth-ranked Notre Dame, a loss for sixth-ranked LSU. However, the 3-0 final didn't tell the whole story. The game was a monumental defensive struggle which sent writers from all over the nation scurrying to their thesauruses for proper
descriptions of the encounter. A 24-yard field goal with
2:54 to play by Notre Dame's Scott Hempel was the
difference in the contest, called by many as the finest ever played in Notre Dame Stadium. LSU's defense was superb as it held the undefeated Irish without a first down from the 2:00 mark of the second quarter until the midway point of the final period. Notre Dame, in fact, gained only one netyard in the entire third quarter. A Notre Dame punt pinned LSU back on its one-yard line with 6:50 remaining in the game. The Tigers could not pick up a first down, and after a punt into a strong wind, the Irish took over at the LSU 36-yard line. Notre Dame moved 29 yards to the LSU seven, where Joe Theismann's third-down pass to Tom Gatewood was nearly intercepted in the end zone by Tommy Casanova. Hempel then booted the game-winning 24-yard field on fourth down. Bert Jones threw three incomplete passes on the Tigers' ensuing possession and Theismann sealed the Notre Dame win with a 26-yard run on third-and-five at the Irish 41-yard line. The Tigers held Notre Dame, which was averaging 540 yards per game in total offense, to just 227 total yards.

The following year LSU won 28-8 in Baton Rouge.

There were 3 very questionable pass interference calls on that final drive that led to the game winning FG, two of which were called against Casanova.. I remember watching that game on a large screen in a crowded hall filled with delirious students cheering every play..
LSU's second team defense played practically the entire third quarter and held ND to minus 13 yards in the quarter. I remember John Weinstein all over the field that day. What was really cool was there was no audio of the game. John Sage was a DT on that team. Giving away my age!!

LSU held out for the Cotton Bowl. Notre Dame decided to break their own rule about going to Bowls and took our Cotton Bowl bid after LSU turned down the Sugar, expecting to play Texas in the Cotton.

One of the alltime screw jobs. ND wasnt even very good. We couldve beaten Texas.

I remember that team from my youth. Back then each team could only be on TV three times in the regular season. Much has changed LOL. If memory serves LSU beat their opponents 35 to 6 that year on average. OM beat the pigs in the Sugar Bowl by 5 and Texas beat ND by 4 in the Cotton. Texas beat the pigs 15-14 in the season finale. 1969 LSU could have played with anyone that year.

Late to the thread so probably answered for you already. The team voted not to play in a bowl as they were the first choice to play UT in the Cotton Bowl. But little Ara's boys decided they would get back to playing in bowl games for the first time in a million (if ever) years.

Real men in those days decided well the hell with you if you're too dammed chicken to play us, we'll just watch on TV rather than playing a lesser opponent. Noteworthy that the fear UT had of playing LSU was real.

It wouldn't work this way nowadays due to the money and snowflake mentality though...I don't think I left anything out.

Incorrect, they voted not to play in another bowl as they had already been asked to play in the Cotton Bowl.

Because, "frick Darrell Royal and Geaux to Hell Notre Dame." Corrupt as frick. frick Ole Miss while we're at it.

That's why.

Mac was probably the best defensive coach in CFB history.

You sir have the history absolutely correct. One of the 5 best football teams LSU ever put on a field...IMO.

I especially cherished the Cotton Bowl 14-7 win over Arky. My dad obtained two tickets and we sat and watched Joe LaBruzo(?spelling) score two touchdowns as LSU shut down the vaunted Hoggie offense...although they did gain a ton of yardage as I recall.

That's not at all the way I remember it. If we had whipped UT as I knew we would, it counted more then than it does now.

Still hate ND to this day, but I did get to watch Bert and Andy lite'm up 2 years later...no more than 15 yards (in the stands) from where Casanova intercepted ND ball in the S. endzone.
