There’s no question that it’s been a hard year for Kalanick and Uber—or really, a bad year compressed down into an awful three months. And it keeps getting worse. That pleasant conversation between Kalanick and his friends in the back of an Uber Black? It devolved into a heated argument over Uber’s fares between the CEO and his driver, Fawzi Kamel, who then turned over a dashboard recording of the conversation to Bloomberg. Kamel, 37, has been driving for Uber since 2011 and wants to draw attention to the plight of Uber drivers. The video shows off Kalanick's pugnacious personality and short temper, which may cause some investors to question whether he has the disposition to lead a $69 billion company with a footprint that spans the globe.

In an email to staff Tuesday after publication of this story, Kalanick apologized to Kamel for treating him disrespectfully. “To say that I am ashamed is an extreme understatement,” Kalanick wrote. “My job as your leader is to lead…and that starts with behaving in a way that makes us all proud. That is not what I did, and it cannot be explained away. It’s clear this video is a reflection of me—and the criticism we’ve received is a stark reminder that I must fundamentally change as a leader and grow up. This is the first time I’ve been willing to admit that I need leadership help and I intend to get it.”

Uber has definitely taken a nose dive in quality of drivers and cost of service.

First of all, Jesus H Christ I would never in a million years leak something like that. It's one thing to be a whistle blower, it's another to record convos and release them in spite.

Most of my Ubers have been fantastic, but more than once these past two weeks our ride would just cancel us after we waited for 10 minutes. Super frustrating.

Good grief, evaluations of companies have gotten stupid. There is no logic to this stuff anymore.

Leader not listening to the rank and file. Not only not listening but refusing to listen and then arguing as if they are a direct report and berating them for being in disagreement.

That's pretty weak and immature. If I were sitting at the boardroom table or holding options to invest and the CEO/founder was exposed like this, confidence would not be my first response.

I've only had one bad experience with Uber and that was in Nashville. I wouldn't even say it was that bad. Black guy who was a personal driver for a rich white guy gave us a ride to midtown. Apparently, rich white guy called his driver and needed to go somewhere. Black driver then complained about slavery. It was awkward as a white guy in his backseat.

"Plight" of Uber drivers

LOL, its not supposed to be a full time job

I have taken Uber maybe 4 times in my life, each time I had a minority driver who barely spoke any english at all. Who knows if they even had a license. Knowing Uber and them being based in the Bay Area wouldn't be surprised if they let illegals sign up just so they could be "progressive"

This article appears to address the wants and/or needs of a very low percentage of actual uber users/drivers. Who gives a frick about "uber black"?! It almost seems like an advertisement for "uber black". The issue I have with uber is that it is still too expensive for a night out. I generally spend upwards of $80-$100 a night with uber if we do dinner and go to two or more places around town. I'm certain most college kids can't afford that. Granted I live in a suburb of Baton Rouge so I'm not right there in town. I can't wait for completely automated cars to arrive, which will hopefully reduce the cost of ride sharing. Hate to see anyones job taken away but I really don't give a shite about a drivers problems. I need a safe and economical ride to and from my destination(s), that is all.

That's refreshing to see.

It's almost always the, "Those comments or that video is not a reflection of who I am" blah blah blah
