I'm guessing its more of a northern or midwestern thing of turning basement into a apartment type living arrangement.

When I grew up in New Orleans in the 70s and 80s, it was not uncommon to see grown men still living with their mommas.

It's a euphemism like toys in the attic. It means you're a fig.

Because men, who should be working, sit around all day being internet ninjas so everyone assumes they live at home and have no job. IE in mom's basement

I mean, if you work a "real" job how could you be on a web site all day

Unless you are a full time working internet ninja

Well, most parents just assumed when Junior went to college he was gone for good, so they converted his bedroom into something useful, like a guest room for Grandma.
Now that he moved back in, Junior is still useless and leaves dirty clothes and Taco Bell bags everywhere, so Mom and Dad don't want to see that crap in the main part of the house.
Hence banishment to the basement.

Millennials finished high school, went to college to get a degree for which there is no jobs available or low pay, move back home to basements up north or old bedrooms down south, and then sponge off of their parents to live and pay back massive amounts of loans that they accrued while getting a degree for which there were no jobs or low pay. BTW, many can find jobs but are too proud to take jobs out of their field of expertise or pay very little.

It's not always the basement but that's more fun for us to say.

A basement allows you to not have to creep up the stairs by your parents BR every night that you want to go out.

My parents basement bedroom was golden.
