Update. Used a keyboard and was able to enter the blue screen after clicking on a nes game
I changed emulators and it worked. That's awesome
So is that why some controls are backwards for some systems? Is it based on the emulator?

Every libretro-based emulator, which is likely what you're using for every system, essentially uses the same button mapping. Nothing should be reversed.
