but to also try and guess where an OL is going to actually end up playing is an exercise in futility

Couldn't have said it better myself. Go and look at any starting OL and almost every time of the time you'll see guys not playing the position they were listed as in recruiting rankings.

For Michigan this year 4/5 starters on the OL were listed as tackles. I bet for LSU it's similar. No coach looks at OL by position they try and get the 5 best guys provided 1 of them knows how to snap.

The truth is if you actually hit on a player good chance he'll play multiple positions

It's worth noting, that I don't agree with you in several aspects on this issue (ie. taking guys that will play RB and stashing them at a position they "also played and were recruited at", when the kid was vocal that he was going to X school to play Y position...), but I do think there is wiggle room along the OL... it's not as defined as say LB vs DB. Hell... even at DB, we have guys that could easily be grabbed as a CB or a S... or along the DL/LB corps, who defines whether that DE out of HS is a DE or an OLB... There is gray area here, but to explicitly grab only OTs without any concern for whether they have or might play interior is a little disingenuous as well. In my case, I tried to point out guys that while some services have them listed as OTs, why they very likely will be on the interior at the next level.

If you are grabbing an OC that's outside the top 500+, there is a good chance it's essentially a wasted pick, because in all likelihood that kid will be on a roster with at least 3-4 talented "surplus" OT/OGs that can't take the starting OT job, but are more gifted than the OC recruit and are versatile enough to take the job. Hell, UGA's center this year is very likely going to be Lamont Gaillard, originally recruited as a DT, converted to a guard last year, then getting moved over with Kublanow leaving.

Unfortunately for you, you've got what I call Patriot's syndrome. If the perception is that you've "cheated" once... everything you do is subject to further scrutiny.
