Why the frick would you want to work 9 hours a day in data entry when you could climb a mountain, build your own house on top, and the sit inside and crochet hats for preemies out of Paracord?

As someone who has designed treatment algorithms, they are only as smart as the people who use them.
You have to be able to think clinically/critically. Until computers can consistently pass a Turing test on a massive scale, meh.

I'm in the process of launching a heavy equipment manufacturer. All machines will be built by hand using components made by a mixture of automation and bespoke configurations.
There will always be some market for people who know how to build stuff that can't realistically be automated.
Mike Rowe has the best perspective on this. Read and watch his stuff.

If robots put 90% of the workforce out of work, who will have money to buy the products produced by these robots?

Yep. People will always shite and drive cars. Configuring robots to fix toilets and engines isn't too close on the horizon I'd think.

UBI is inevitable
The transition is going to upset many, but we need to start planning now

That's not an answer to my question.

.. Yes it is..
If everyone was given UBI they'd have money to purchase goods

If Universal Basic Income was such a good idea and so easy to achieve, wouldn't it have been implemented already?

World is gonna be like Star Trek. You ever see poor people on Star Trek?

It has never been needed. New times are going to soon require new approaches.
It is being tested right now in Scandinavia.

Higher profits as long as competition uses people

Think about how many more people could have jobs if we got rid of shite like refrigeration, or the wheel, or electricity!
Automation is a fantastic tool of human production. We WANT machines to do work for us. It makes us more productive and free to do other, more productive things with our time.
There will always be a need for manual labor in some capacity. The problem with that is that anyone can do those task with minimal training. Low skill, low barrier to entry jobs are always going to pay less. Want a good, long term job that pays well? You'd better learn a skill of some kind.

freeing up that labor to be used in more efficient parts of the economy.
Because that part isn't happening. Things are becoming more affordable, yes. But the people being replaced by robots are not finding jobs in other sectors of the economy. They are just becoming unemployed or under-employed.
Why? Because they do not have the skills necessary to move to the jobs with openings.
They could be... but that would require training, and someone has to pay for that.

Yes because our current welfare system has worked so well and creates incredible wellbeing.

Trump cant solve this one with trade barriers.
Computerized gadgets can replace people.
This was already the biggest problem and hes ignoring it.
Kick the can down the road.

I prefer UBI but it is a sensitive balance in how it is setup.

Jobs aren't ends, they are means. IOW, you don't work just to work. You work in order to gain purchasing power through the wages you earn. When things are produced more efficiently, which is what automation does, your purchasing power rises.
This is true, and it applies also to another issue currently being discussed: Obamacare. Health insurance isn't the ends, it is a means. Receiving health care is the ends. There are other ways to get people access to health care besides forcing them to buy health insurance. Those other ways may be better or worse, but they exist.
quote:
Jobs we didn't even consider will open up in the economy
In theory, yes, but in reality this isn't happening, because again training, but also lack of investment.
quote:
people will work a lot less, because people will be able to afford it.
Now you are getting into guaranteed minimun income territory.

Not if we start instilling continuous learning and mobility into the younger generations. I've told my kids for years that they need plans B and C, and they always need to be learning from different fields than their own.
