It's hard to find a MMO that can keep my attention, hell I go back and play EQ for a month or two every year because it's my first love, WoW is in 2nd place and I play it for a month every couple of years. I would love to find a MMO that could keep my attention.

Tried:

Everquest 2 - I love the crafting and house "building" in this game and it's fun but after a while you need a guild to progress.

Age of Conan - The best starting area in any MMO, but gets muddied after that.

RIFT - This kept me for a few months but then lost interest.

Warhammer - It was OK but didn't keep me past the initial month.

Atlantica Online - This was a great game and it ranks third on my MMO list, this game did so many things different than any other MMO and they were FUN, but you need a good guild holding a town to make it fun.

Lord of the Rings - This is fourth on my list but I always hit a wall around level 35, very good up to that point and did a good job up to that point.

Guild Wars - Joined late to the game and it was fun for a while.

Guild Wars 2 - Very good game but the crafting was too damn hard to figure out, still put a few months into it and enjoyed it, I still fire it up once a year.

D&D Online - had a lot of fun in this but it became cash shop heavy to progress.

Star Wars the old Republic - Fun game and I still play it for a while every year or two, but still not endgame that matters, and to experience different character stories you have to trudge through the same areas every time.

Star Trek - Didn't get past a few days in this.

Dare Ages of Camelot - I regret missing this game but I was busy playing EQ, tried it for a bit after the fact and it was too late.

Original Star Wars MMO - Missed the before NGE ruined the game because I was playing EQ.

Elder Scrolls - Played the Beta and wasn't impressed, but thinking of playing again.

Neverwinter - This is still a good game that I play every couple of years, but after time it's hard to catch up with the updates because you feel lost. Still worth playing.

Everquest Landmark - This was fun, but the building was too technical.

Rust and games like this where your shite can get wiped out and you have to start from scratch don't do much for me, I have tried a few.

I am sure I am missing some and will add them later if somene joggs my memory, I have tried a lot of the Asian MMO's but none of them are memorable, I have never tried a Final Fantasy MMO because of the reported grind.

Game others have reminded me of:

Vangaurd - Was supposed to be the next EQ and was fun but buggy as hell and didn't stick.

City of Heroes - It was fun but I have never been into the super hero genre. It was fun though.

EVE - Hold shite the learning curve in that game was too much for me and I suck at flying games.

Definace - It was fun but nothing stood out for me and didn't keep my interest.

Dark age of Camelot- amazing but system limitations caused too much lag during large scale sieges. Servers and clients couldn't handle 200 people sieging a keep with spells and siege engines going off.

This led to 3 Am sieges, but eventually people lost interest.

There was a shared pve/pvp dungeon called Darkness Falls where all 3 realms could fight bosses and each other. Incredible stuff.

Skirmishes and solo pvp was great. And the regular Pve was really good.

WoW - played thru wrath then quit. Got boring. Was fun.

Guild wars 2 - very fun solo leveling. Endgame was lacking when I quit. I suspect it's a very solid game now.

Dark Age of Camelot --- The best ever made.

Star Wars The Old Republic --- PVP was legit

Planetside --- Absolutely miss the golden ages of this game. Planetside 2 just sucks.

Then everything else randomly mixed in. Nothing held my interest like the three above. though.

FFXIV was one I played for awhile because a few of my friends played it.

I enjoyed it mostly because it was on console and had crossover play to PC. It was fun and like almost any other MMO, I don't mind grinding.

I stopped playing though after a couple of months. My friends were WAYYYY in front of me level wise and they eventually got tired of running through the story and what not with me so I lost interest.

RIFT

My first MMO experience because it was free. Andvari was a part of this. It was fun enough even though I quickly got tired of 1,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,4,1,1........I've tried to go back to it a few times but there's nothing about the world that grabs me.

I never knew about the stupid joy of stripping down to your underwear and dancing in the middle of a town before this game.

Forgot I had a wolf named Noodles.

RIFT lasted for maybe a month before I decided to go big with FFXIV.........1.0, and this is where I've spent a majority of my MMO time. I love the game and kind of wish I still had the time to play it. The friends I played with gave it up and it's just not as fun. Have always loved FF music so I could play it for just that alone. Dungeon runs and primal fights are great and there's just so much to do that you'll never run out of content, which to me became overwhelming because I always felt that I was so far behind everyone else and prevented myself from just enjoying my own pace. I'll re-up for a month every once in a while just to maintain my legacy status, but just no time.

1.0 days:

Best name ever

Power leveling a friend with some freak creeping me.

In Ul'Dah like a day before they shut down the game to start getting ARR up and running.

EQ - still randomly play on the EMU servers

EQ2 - first ever raiding experience, played with a lot of real life friends...great memories of this game, but couldn't live up to EQ

Anarchy Online- one of the games I played through a couple of weeks and went back to EQ

Dark Ages of Camelot- never gave it a fair chance b/c EQ, but remember it being fun early on

WoW- my group of friends went to EQ2 instead of WoW so I got a late start here. It's fun to frick off on for a couple of months still.

Rift- basically leveld to max and quit
Warhammer Online - enjoyed the pvp a lot in this...the siege aspect of this game was cool af but never saw many large battles.

Vanguard - best crafting ever...I built my own house brick by brick and then built one for someone else and traded my house for a boat

FF XI - didn't play this one much

FF XIV - beautiful...spent more time crafting than anything else

Guild Wars 2 - possibly one of the best looking games...jump puzzles were a lot of fun. Again, one I got in early on, leveled to max and quit because I didn't know what to do anymore.

Star Wars the old Republic - big ole pile of meh for me

TESO - didn't play this one much

Black Desert Online - really fun. spent more time crafting and doing supply lines than leveling and wound up quitting early on. not really sure why, though.

I'm sure I'm forgetting some here and there, but that's the basic list. EQ has always been my favorite. EQ/EQ2/WoW have held my attention longer than most

EQ2, Vanguard and, Elder Scrolls Online are all games that were significantly better a year after than at launch.

I avoid MMOs because they just destroy my life. A decent one that was good for being a casual was Neverwinter on the xbone.

ETA: nothing will ever beat original EQ. I started playing a week before Luclin launched. What a fricking game.

I can't play MMO's anymore, there's just not enough time. But I do miss the experience. From what I have played lately it isn't worth it anyway. The only one that vaguely interests me outside of GW2 is FFXIV, but that's almost too old now.

My thoughts:

Tier 1
Everquest - The best. The wild west. Played from launch and my first character was a bard and the fact that we were in that exploration phase and created twisting was something I'll never forget. GOAT game experience.
Dark Age of Camelot - Best PvP straight up
City of Heroes - Best story and best community/events/most unique character building
Guild Wars 2 - Best Overall game I just never had the time, this was the last one I played.
LOTRO - Best narrative experience and world building. At least until they want FTP which didn't work. The one game that was completely worth the subscription.

Tier 2
Guild Wars
Eve
Ultima Online
Star Wars Galaxies
Vanguard

Tier 3
RIFT
EQ 2
Warhammer
The Secret World
DCUO

Tier 4
Neverwinter
D&D Online
Star Trek
Horizons

I've played WoW, GW2, SWTOR, and LOTRO.

I thought SWTOR was good but never should have been sub based. I couldn't make use of it and only played every once in a while. PvP was really good from what I remember, didn't like PVE.

Never got into LOTRO really.

GW2 had the best leveling experience the first go around I have had. I really enjoyed the events and large scale stuff as I was running around.

WoW will always be my favorite MMO and possibly favorite game I've played. It may not be the GOAT, but I've met many friends that I will play with for a long time, regardless of game. Never had that from any game I've played. The PVE isn't the same as it used to be, but I still enjoy it. PVP is still a hit or miss, but I don't think you can play PvP every now and then and be good at it in WoW.

I was pretty young when UA and EQ came out, so I never really played them. WoW came out when I was in my teens so I grew up with that. I'll always remember the "WoW will never be EQ" crowd, so it must have been good.

I left out a lot of the random, more obscure F2P titles I've tried. I'm going to try to go in somewhat of an order but not really:

EverQuest -- My intro into the world of MMORPGs. This was before there were 200 other MMOs on the market and gaming over the internet wasn't what it is today. There was a certain novelty from meeting people from all over the world in a virtual living space. Back then, we cared more about the journey than the destination, and while the game was devoid of any real contact (mostly just areas within which to slaughter monsters), the community made the game what it is.

Final Fantasy XI -- Basically the Japanese EverQuest. Another great game focused more on the journey than the end destination. Fantastic graphics and music. Those elements carried over to XIV. A bit too hardcore in spots. I don't like the repeated grinding for sub-classes and unlocking new classes like Paladin, Ninja, etc.

EverQuest Online Adventures -- EverQuest on the PS2 basically. Not really dumbed down per say but streamlined to focus on what made EQ so great. Another game that focuses mostly on the fun you make with the people you play with. Also, this game has an insane attention to detail and affection for the world it takes place in. EQOA takes place 500 years "before" the original EverQuest and unlike EQ2, the game world strongly resembles that of the original EverQuest right down to some of the same textures and layouts of certain zones. Seeing the Befallen dungeon as a temple of Marr in EQOA with the exact same wall texture and zone layout was amazing.

Dark Age of Camelot -- 3 factions with completely unique landmasses was a pretty novel idea. The PVP was amazing, especially joining forces with the other faction whom you couldn't verbally communicate with to take down a more powerful opponent. I do think that the 3 factions split the playerbase a bit too much though. When I played back in around 2004-2005, there were usually only 400-500 people online in my realm at a given time which isn't a whole lot for an MMO.

Asheron's Call -- I came into this game way late, but it never had the legs of something like EQ. Graphically, it looks worse than Runescape does today. Water is literally a flat blue texture that makes splashing noises when you walk on it. Character progression is pretty sandboxish and the combat is fast paced and fun.

Asheron's Call 2 -- I like the look of the game world. It's a prototype for DDO and LotRO and actually does a lot that WoW would later take from it such as the solo-oriented progression and the UI. Wish I spent more time with the game during it's "re-launch" before it died again. I may try to play before the end of January when it goes away for good.

Ultima Online -- Would have been fantastic to play at launch and for the first couple of years afterwards. I'd love to get into an MMO like UO if they still made them.

Guild Wars -- I loved this game back in the day. The buy-to-play MMO-lite model was unique for it's day. A good alternative to WoW if you didn't want to pay a monthly fee. Great visual style. Great music. Great emphasis on group play. The dual class system was much more favorable as opposed to how Final Fantasy does it, and it made for some fun character building. I've always wanted to get a group of friends together to play through the campaigns, but I haven't been successful as of yet.

Star Wars Galaxes: I played pre and post NGE. Pre-NGE my computer was garbage, and I was playing on dial up. Needless to say, I had a bad time. I would have played the crap out of it otherwise though. Post-NGE I still thought the game was good, but I got so tired of that one single quest line that you follow for almost the entire game.

EverQuest II -- The first MMO I spent a lot of time in post-EQ. This game was amazing at launch. The visuals were ahead of their time, and it did the whole voice acting thing before SW:TOR. It has been through some radical changes post-launch. It started out very similar to EQ1 (except for group XP debt which was a horrible idea) and today it's very similar to WoW, but it's still one of my favorite MMORPGs.

Mabinogi -- I wish I could get into this game. Seems like a fun sandbox-style MMO. It's really old at this point though.

Lineage II -- I came into this game too late as well. I am not sure it mattered all that much. Beautiful music and good art direction, but it felt like a cheap F2P game. Ultimately that's because I think it was. At least in Korea.

Archlord -- lol

AION -- At the time it released, it was probably the best looking MMO out there. It's a Korean-made MMORPG that tries so hard to appeal the WoW audience, but they just don't quite understand the appeal of a game like WoW over something as hardcore grindy as Lineage II. As a result, they made a game that didn't really go over too well with western audiences. It was one of the first premium MMOs to go fully F2P though, so it's pretty decent for what it is. Probably still has a good sized playerbase.

Back in the day when I had a horrible system, I latched onto a MMO that would work.

My shame....

Runescape

I enjoyed it. Got hooked.

But...I also understand anyone who thought it was garbage. It was $4.95 a month at that time so not like much could be expected.

I spent such an insane amount of time on the game, I refused to ever get sucked into another MMORPG.

Whenever I have the urge, I head back over to Runescape for a few months, get burned out on the grind. I had a recent revisit for about 3 months.

Thankfully Subnautica pulled me out of my stupor and ME4 is right around the corner.

Only one I ever played was MajorMUD. shite was text based. A bunch of my friends in high school had a server that we all played on, eventually got on a larger server and played for a while. It was old school, and didn't have all the stupid crap like cooking crafting etc. You just killed shite, did quests and leveled up. When I quit I had a mystic and a mage that we're basically gods and could solo dragons and other majorly bad hombres. I would just roll through town killing random players and sorting through the loot. Think I gave those characters to somebody. It had races and classes, you picked alignments, or just did bad shite and became evil. I think there may even be random servers still running the game.

I don't even like having this conversation. PC gaming feels lost without good MMOs.

My heart also hurts everyday after 2012 when City of Heroes was shut down. Feels like my life was ruined, as if a family member died. I have wandered this Earth aimlessly ever since.

Out of playing SWTOR, GW, WoW, GW2, RuneScape, and finally, SWG, SWG is tGOAT to me.

I don't know of another MMO that ever created a successful MMO sandbox pretty much. At its core, that's what SWG is. A Star Wars game where you can do basically whatever you want.

Mind you, this is Pre-NGE that I'm talking about.
I've been playing it for over a year now via emulator. Sometimes time isn't the most permitting when it comes to playing it, but holy shite is that game fantastic.

It has its flaws, as does every game, but the community and how the game "forces" a community into existence is amazing.

DC Universe Online is pretty fun until you reach the absolute limit of what you can do as a F2P player (Level 30, Combat Rating 53)

My thoughts exactly. Such an awesome experience in those first 20 levels.

Warhammer - It was OK but didn't keep me past the initial month.

Liked the PVP focus, but wasn't able to play enough to get much out of it.

Guild Wars Guild Wars 2

Was LTTP for GW1. GW2 is alright. Had a lot to do in it, but I really hated the combat. Once you learned all of the skills for your weapons, that was it. There was nothing else to really do.

Dark Ages of Camelot

Tried to get into this in like 2002, but my PC was too garbage to run it at anything better than 5 fps.

Others I've played:
FFXI - RDM on Shiva, tons of great memories. First MMO I loved.
WOW - Played a friend's house various times. Never really got into it. Had a friend give me a copy as a gift and I played through Burning Crusade. Still didn't like it.
Tera - Probably the best combat of any MMO I've played. Had a lot of fun with it. Is too grindy tho
FFXIV - A lot of fun and I still play it.
Blade & Soul - Great combat and a mildly interesting story. Bogged down by terribly expensive cash shop and some weird design choices.
Black Desert Online - Tons to do, very pretty, but lacking any real soul. You feel pretty lost in this game but it's because there's no real direction in it.
