They will have upwards of 40 million in cap space and relatively high draft picks.
They will almost certainly go all in this year and attempt to be big players in FA on the defensive side of the ball and OL. I can see them moving around in the draft too.
Drew has 1 year left on his current deal and Payton/Loomis are finally starting to feel the pressure from fans and the media. This is it. They have to make the playoffs this year or I think its all over. Brees walks and tries to win a SB in the least year or two of his career, and Payton is gone. Loomis fails up into the Benson empire and another GM takes over.
So they will go all out for a 1-2 year run.
Makes sense.....

The problem isn't Brees. It's drafting and bad free agent deals
100%
our free agent signings may somehow be worse than our drafting. just think about all the huge busts like byrd
i mean then we had the disaster of the offseason where we had to dump gallette and jimmy
our draft a few years ago may go down as one of the worst in NFL history

Where is the accountability within though?
With Benson barely there mentally, who is around to hold Loomis and Payton accountable?
How the frick can Loomis possibly be the GM of two separate franchises?
Saints need new ownership immediately.
What happens when Benson passes?
ETA: Loomis is president of operations, not GM.

payton the coach I'd still take over most, but Payton the FO guy is terrible and not the Bill Parcells he seems to fancy himself as. He was given way too much stroke following the SB, Benson's healthy probably hasn't helped much either
the byrd signing was just so fricking stupid given how we went on to use him, just makes no sense.

Poor drafting (2012-2014) with aging vets and poor free agency decisions dug this current grave.
While their solid core pieces aged or left for free agency, they couldn't replace it with even talent fast enough.
Goodwin left, it became dlp, Goodwin again, and then Unger.
Evans aged and nobody stepped up
Nicks left and Grubbs was a clear downgrade
Vilma/fujita were the core 2 lbs and they ended up replacing those two with clear downgrades lofton/Hawthorne and even now Robertson/Ellerbe/Anthony aren't even close.
Greer/porter were replaced by lewis/Breaux, Breaux/Williams and injury has derailed a lot of that.
Thats the roughest part, the fact they couldn't replace quality talent appropriately. That 2012 draft class dug a huge hole because they gambled on 4 guys with massive 5 year contracts
Probably one of the most sensible post so far. Although 2013 draft wasn't necessarily aweful, 12 and 14 both were. And I'm not saying 2013 draft was great but Vaccaro and Armstead have turned out to be good players. Lack of draft picks over the years and dead money are obviously the biggest reasons. Saints went into all in now mode when Brees still had a good 4-5 years left and it blew up in their faces. You can go into all in now mode when you truly feel it's his last year and you do it for that one year. You can't go into all in now mode 3-4 years in a row, especially when you have so few draft picks every year.
Aside from the Spiller's derp and the money tied to Fleener I feel the last couple off seasons have been pretty good. Although lack of draft picks last year (even though I feel we hit on them really well) and only 6 picks as of now now for next draft is way too few. If Saints had the off seasons in 2013 and 14 like we did in 15 and 16 we'd be much better off. Can't do much about 2012, that was just insanely bad year.

this is what i don't understand. each one of those jobs in and of themselves is the pinnacle of the profession for someone on that side of the game. he has the job twice. fricking insane.

AFC North
Roethlisberger, Flacco, Dalton, and whatever dogshit the Browns run out are not better than NFC South QBs. Obviously Roethlisberger is an all time great but the other three are nowhere close.

NFC East
Cousins, Manning, Dak, Wentz. I like Cousins and Eli has his moments, but the jury is still out on Dak and Wentz. They are not better than NFC South QBs.

Rodgers is on another planet, and Stafford is very good, but Cutler is overrated and Bridgewater may never be the same player. They aren't better overall either.

they didn't even talk to Ryan about it
just signed him to a HUGE deal and told Ryan to change the D to accommodate him

He isn't the GM of the Pelicans. Dell Demps is.
He is the president of Basketball ops. By all accounts his role his pretty limited.

Error on my part.
But the guy shouldn't have anything to do with the Pelicans.
Its asinine.
Again, who holds Loomis accountable with his frick ups? Benson's wife?

the problem with the pelicans part is who holds Demps accountable? Loomis by name should be lighting a fire on his arse, but it seems like loomis just says eh don't care.
As for the saints franchise, instead of holding a person accountable (i.e. Loomis), he just spends $$$$ to hire more people to do small jobs.
Ireland = scouting, but people say he's more like the GM-personnel aspect while Loomis is GM-money aspect. 2 payrolls, 1 job. that I personally don't care if it produces results, the payrolls don't affect our cap and our ability to field good players.

Essentially no one. That's why I've said many times, if anything, he will "fail up" into a role over the entire Benson Empire.
Pelicans need a legitimate Pres of BBall Ops in the worst way.

Why can't you just accept the fact that Brees is not a HOF-caliber QB???
Why is this dude still allowed to post? His trolling is so obvious

Drew Brees is one of the greatest playoff players ever . 66% completion with 24 td - 6int and passer rating of 101

If the Saints are serious about winning, they should consider cutting ties with Brees in order to upgrade across the board.
After three straight seasons below .500, Brees is still producing stats but they aren't winning enough because they can't afford good enough players everywhere else.
