Just can't bring myself to do something like that at Christmas time. There's plenty of kids out there that I'm sure would want one for Christmas but can't get one now bc we have grown adults running to the store bright and early and grabbing them all up just to make a profit. Ridiculous.

I'm with you bamafan. I go out of my way to hit up goodwills and flea markets/pawn shops/ebay auctions to get donations and buy really cheap "broken" systems for repair. Most of them are dirty and just need a good clean.. Or, in the case of the nes, just a replacement 72 pin connector (easy fix, costs 4 bucks). I then donate them to my friend's kids or go on the local swap shops and do giveaways.

I'm kind of a diehard in the collectors scene/hobby, so i already have pristine systems hooked up to my crt. Helping to spread holiday cheer and the gift of the old school gaming is a passion of mine. Seeing the scalpers and resalers who either purchase the whole stock outright and flip a profit on families just getting the hot item for their kids makes me sad.

But yeah. Come febuary, anyone sitting on a stock of these will have to return them. It really doesn't effect them at all. It's a failsafe way to quadruple your investment.

A fool and his money.

The real victims are the kids whose parents are buying the hype because of their nostalgia.

getting a kid to play these games with terrible graphics these days rarely works out

I've seen the opposite effect 2/3rds of the time. The simpler gameplay and the catchy music hooks most of them in. My nieces and nephews can't put down most of the games I put in front of them. Especially stuff from the genesis/snes era.

Give a kid spy hunter on the nes or choplifter on the master system and see if he snuffs at it.

Yeah, this isn't true, at least not for my kids. I've played the most recent Ratchet and Clank game with my 6 year old son and 5 year old daughter, which to them is on the same level as a Pixar movie.

And I've played Metal Slug on my Raspberry Pi with them.

Guess which one they've asked several times to play more of? They also love playing Contra on the NES and Pokemon on the GBA, which both have even more primitive graphics. I have to convince them to play Ratchet and Clank with me.

Oh, no doubt. I've enjoyed the couple of hours I've played of it (and so have the kids once I got them on board) but they enjoy the retro games more, probably because their gameplay is simpler, as was mentioned above by redkillroy.

Honestly, the graphics never even come up in conversation for any game I've showed them, from Atari 2600 to PS4. All they care about is if they're having fun.

Have you heard of anyone using an original nes case? Got one in the attic and no more crt tv's. Would be pretty cool to use the original controllers if possible.

Yeah, there are a lot of people using original cases, but they are so damn big. I got someone printing me one out like this.

If you want to spend some money, you can get the 8bitdo Bluetooth controllers that look like original NES, but have buttons for SNES as well and have a cordless machine. They are like $50-60 for two of those controllers though. I just have some cheap SNES knockoff corded USB controllers right now for mine.

Agreed on the size but if I'm gonna get all nostalgic I might as well go all out (might even put in a timer that makes you blow in the cartridge slot every 30 minutes ).

I did a little digging last night and it looks like there's a way to use the existing controllers/ports and I'm thinking I'd prefer to have them fixed to the ports because the gun is useless. The only case modifications would be for the HDMI and then maybe a way to store the controllers inside the case when it's not in use or travelling.

Biggest problem with those is you limit the amount of games you can play on other emulators.

As much as people are paying for these things, you could buy a RetroUSB AVS for $170 and actually be able to play all the NES library with your own carts in HD. I own one and it's an amazing machine.

It's an actual hardware clone of the NES and the first of its kind and only kind on the market right now being an FPGA machine. It can be updated through firmware to add new things like color palettes and many other things.

It's not emulation like the Retron 5 or other emulation machines. It's actual hardware and is 100% compatible with the NES library, NES homebrew, etc. It also plays the Famicom library and you can use the Famicom Disk system with it.

Those are real NES power/reset buttons btw. The guy that created this machine somehow got his hands on brand new buttons that were stored somewhere. He bought them all up.

I'm a bigger fan of the retron 5 for HD gameplay myself.
