Agreed.
These are a few I took as we were coming up to the castle.

One more thing, if you are looking for snow, there was not much to be had. Most of the ski slopes we passed were spraying artificial snow.

awesome photos!
I looked more into Andechs and that is VERY tempting. I can't decide.
Anything in particular in the city of Munich that you loved the most? Restaurants, bars, anything really... I'll find plenty on my own, but any tips are welcome.

the Glockenspiel at Marienplatz is really cool. Also there is Augustiner Klosterwirt just a couple blocks away that will be a must do from now on. We loved the Augustiner Edelstof and the Dunkel beers. They were coming straight from the barrels, supposedly. The weisswurst was really good and supposed to be the best in the city. Get it with the sweet mustard.

Can't wait. I leave Friday morning. This is a solo trip for me, so I'm being a little more diligent about occupying my time.
looks like you had a great time. I'll definitely report back.

The glockenspiel goes off about 5 minutes after the top of the hour and it takes about 5 minutes for the whole song and dance to finish. I have several vids of it. All in all we had an amazing time in Munchen and will be back at least once a year. A Berlin trip is next though. Also, if you get up to the North, don't skip Cologne. The cathedral is stunning. The 533 steps to the top of the tower will test your endurance!
Also, the one word you absolutely must remmeber to get around Germany is Hauptbahnhof(the centeral station)! There is one in every city and you can get to the rest from there.

Yes, the Viktualienmarkt biergarten is my favorite spot, but likely closed outside of Christmas markets...
Marienplatz, touristy as it might be, cannot be missed. Augustiner Keller if open is a must. I've only been in summertime.
Spend time in the Englischergarten...Central Park on steroids.
I say Andechs is worth a trip. We did Mass there as well.
ETA: Köln cathedral is gorgeous
ETA2: Converted knows the best bier...Prost

Augustiner Keller
Thanks Drock! We did Augustiner Keller the first night we were in town. It was great, and close to the Hauptbahnhof, but I preferred the coziness of Augustiner Klosterwirt. We sat downstairs and you could see the barrels of beer being rotated through in the back. Augustiner Klosterwirt is actually on the site of the original Augustinian monastery.
Here are the barrels.

They rotate through on a conveyor belt. Apparently, you can watch them rotate out with more frequency as the evening wears on. We were there for lunch and still saw them switch out 2 barrels in the short time we spent there. Needless to say, they sell a LOT of beer.

Great spot!
I'll have to check it out next time I'm in München!

I would 3rd or whatever Fussen and the Ludwig castles. I've been to them all.
If I was single with a day to kill and you didn't want to chase poon, I'd honestly rent a decent car and drive to Fussen and the Alps. That whole area around Neuschwanstein is beautiful, I mean you have to remember that's where the king vacationed and built their vacation homes so its gotta be a top spot in Bavaria. Driving through the alps in a decent car is a blast.

Yeah, the view isn't too shabby from the castle.

The views from INSIDE the castle were amazing. Unfortunately, they are VERY strict about their no photo policy inside the castles.

I might change my mind while there about Fussen while there. Best part about going alone is I can do that.
And no chasing "poon". straight female here.

Definitely checking out Klosterwirt. That sounds and looks exactly like what I would enjoy.

Klosterwirt is beautiful and Paulander's brew pub near there and their Biergarten up the hill (Nockherberg) is nice too. When in Munich I stay in that neighborhood, just over the train tracks from the City Center. It's a quiet area with street parking and an easy walk as Munich's not horribly hilly.
Prost!

I'm curious why you didn't like Munich? I've been there three times and while never in winter, I've thought it was a great city. Nice size, very contemporary, people are nice, etc.
Given that, I would probably agree that Bavaria in general and the Alps are fantastic.
Looks like a great trip!

Berchtesgaden was a highlight of my trip, too.
Unfortunately, this was my view atop Eagle's Nest:

It's not that I didn't like Munich, b/c I had a good time there. Several nights I drank too much and had a hell of a good time with people. I'm just more of an outdoors person and for some trips my goal is to get out of the city. I live in Dallas, so that might explain that.

Eagle's Next is closed this time of year, so I didn't get a chance to go up there. I'm sure the view would have been just like that.
Berchtesgaden is fantastic.
FYI- I stayed at Alpina Ros while there. 60 USD a night and the room was fully upgraded. Very modern. The free breakfast? I was expecting something like Holiday Inn at 60 bucks a night. Full spread that looked like something you would find at a reception. GREAT people work there and I highly recommend it to anyone.
That said...the small town village/everyone knows everyone bit me in the arse there. I received an email when I got back to the states from someone I met at the pub I went to. I made the mistake of telling him I was staying at Ros something... Well, guess what? He found it and his friend runs the front desk. He gave him my name!!!! If you google my name it takes you to my company website and my bio is there. He fricking emailed me. Harmless dude, but damn...
I loved the hotel other than that, but I'm going to have to write a review about that. Not ok.
