More than 50,000 Americans died from drug overdoses last year, the most ever.
The disastrous tally has been pushed to new heights by soaring abuse of heroin and prescription painkillers, a class of drugs known as opioids.
Heroin deaths rose 23 percent in one year, to 12,989, slightly higher than the number of gun homicides, according to government data released Thursday.

Sad news for 50,000 families. That's a lot of parents burying their children.

It's such a tough problem. We Americans will get our dope, one way or the other. Via legal or illegal means.

It is amazing to me that this epidemic gets getting larger with drugs like suboxone out there.
BUT suboxone is so damn expensive that a heroin junkie has a hard time coming up with about $750 for a Dr visit and prescription every single month.

That's great news. The fewer degenerates in this country the better.

Fixed it for them. Sweeping change has consequences. They took Vicodin and made it essentially as hard to get as Oxycontin. Making Oxycontin even more expensive.
Foolish policy. And you are talking to an ER nurse who loves telling drug seekers to frick off because our docs don't carry triplicates.

Ok, this is conclusive proof that the War on Drugs kills more than it saves. The failure on heroin and opiates particularly means we need to reevaluate everything in the War on Drugs. That is simply inexcusable. 23% spike in deaths? What the shite?

The sad part is it's only going to get worse.

I had to get a pretty minor dental procedure done not too long ago. It's expected you'll go through about 2 or 3 days of pain afterwards, so I was prescribed 30 pills of Oxycontin.
30 freaking pills. For 2-3 days of pain. I thought it was a mistake when I picked the prescription up, but apparently that's the norm.
It is not hard to see why so many people are getting hooked on opioids and eventually to heroin.
