Essentially, that is true... although Arnsbarger did recruit, just not as strongly in LA, and ehen he lost that base of home grown talent, the end was in sight.

Archer could not recruit the out-of-state kids that Arnsbarger had, and the solid LA base was gone... not until Saban arrived did LSU really get back to hauling in all the best LA kids... and then when Saban landed at Alabama he began to chip away at the best of the best and cherry pick a few from LA in each class. He's had few misses on the top tier kuds from LA that he's really gone after.

Good talent was leaving the state. They were going to schools like FSU and Miami. That's why we sucked in the 90s.

Games are won on the recruiting trail. That's why Saban is so good. He's a good coach but the best recruiter. I think his stint at Miami proved Saban's coaching abilities. His recruiting ablities are top notch. 95% of NCAA coaches could win with Saban's players. His coaching ability is nothing special but his recruiting is the best. While other coaches are on vacation and the golf course during offseason Saban is f'ing recruiting. Recruiting is the key to success in college. If you have the best players you can make any scheme look good.

Bill arnsparger had LSU on the cusp of greatness much like Saban he was an NFL coach who turned our defenses into some of the best LSU has had. When he left even though he told us Mike archer wasn't ready we hired his defensive coordinator to replace him on the cheap. The administration was much like it is now with a bozo as ad and a ton of political influence and good ole boy type decision makers. Archer had success in his first couple of season having been left with a roster full of LSU greats but took a team that had won an sec title and with mostly the same personnel had a 4-7 season in Tommy Hodsons Sr. Year. He failed to recruit and when he was finally terminated the cubbard was bare. Hallman took over and had some decent recruiting cycles but never had the love of his players. Hallman was hired because of the success he had at southern miss that was mostly due to Brett Farve and Jake Reed he came in acted like a child while using extreme and unfair discipline on his players to which they didn't respond well to. His tenure was the worst at LSU by far of any coach in the modern era for sure. When he was canned we hired Jerry Dinardo who made it a mission to personally visit every high school and recruit as tirelessly as possible. He brought back the magic and injected new life into the program landing some impressive recruits though he was never able to knock down the New Orleans wall that LSU couldn't seem to crack in recruiting. Dinardo was having a successful run very miles like until he lost his OC and DC and his replacement hires were not very good leading us to 7 wins in 2 years combined. He was fired and Nick Saban took over the rest is history.

I always heard he recommended Archer.

Archer was an internal promotion, loved by the players, who actually showed up at the BOS meeting to "demand" Archer be hired.

Archer road Arnspargers coat tails, but he couldn't recruit and it faded quickly. Then came the Hallman experiment that soon gave way to the Dinardo regime. The only thing Dinardo could do was recruit, so the cupboard wasn't completely bare when Saban arrived.

Archer's hiring is eerily similar to O's hiring pattern, hence the upset from fans that lived through it before.

Archer actually signed a couple fantastic Classes early. 1988 was a top 10 recruiting class according to the magazines

We actually signed the number 1 parade all American qb Chad Loup

Three people wanted interviews: Mike Archer, Steve Spurrier and Mike Shannahan. Archer was an excellent up and coming defensive coach. He was just in way over his head at that time.

Outside of our upset wins over bama in 93, florida in 97 and Kevin Faulk's carrer, LSU fans do not talk about the 90s

One additional redeeming quality of the 90's is that we sucked so bad that I was able to get season tickets in '98

The biggest miss out of New Orleans was Marshall Faulk. We were recruiting him as a CB.

Just looked back on the Archer recruiting years

Signed there top 10 classes in a row according to UPI, the only service who did rankings back then

So it appears people are trying to rewrite history making him a bad recruiter

But 4-7 and 5-6 finished him off in 1989 and 1990. He wasn't a bad dude, but you can't put lipstick on a pig.

What coaches did we pass on when we hired Archer? That is one part of the equation some people are missing. Outside of Jimbo and Herman there were no home run hires. There wasn't anyone else out there that wouldn't have had half the fan base saying was a terrible hire.

This. Although, we had some really great players. Overall, the 90's had way less talent than we have today. We were recruiting All-State Players from Louisiana and the surrounding areas vs. All-American type talent of today.

Once Nick Saban became our HC, he locked down the borders of Louisiana thus making us relevant as a potential powerhouse team. Heck, I tend to believe Les Miles was an above average coach who basically benefitted from having Top-Tier talent that translated to him winning 9 or 10 games a year.

Florida in '97 was the game I became an LSU fan.

I was too young to realize DiNardo was steering the ship into a rocky embankment.

Many reasons why the late 80's and most of the 90's likely never happen again...

1. LSU was not competitive with pay for coaches.
2. Lost most of our recruits from NOLA to FSU, Miami, Mich, ND, Nebraska, etc
3. Since we have won 2 national titles many of the good recruits have only know LSU to be a powerhouse...unlike in 80's & 90's
4. Saban upgraded our facilities to the best in the nation...not sure they are still the best but probably too 5

I think too many fans worry about going back to the 90's but we are a completely different orogram now than back then so I don't think it's possible

Practice...to answer the challenge...

The kicking practice was careless. No one truly worked on anything concerning technique or situations. It was just lazy walking around with a few hits of the ball here and there.

The other parts of practice were uninspired and listening to the instructions was difficult due to the true lack of intelligence in the presentation.

It really was a mess. The final talk at the end of practice had me ready to laugh or cry...because I knew what was coming that season.

Only thing I can add is I really became engaged with LSU football in 1995. I was 13 and I remember my dad calling me from work one day saying, " the news just said LSU got Marshall Faulks cousin and he might be better than Marshall ". Well I don't know if he was or wasn't better, but man what great memories from just 95.

Faulk
Booger
Wiley
Northern
Wilson
Kennison

Just a few of the special names from 95.

Gerry dinardo might have failed but he brought back the magic.

White home jerseys.
H style goal posts.
Bring back the magic game (auburn)

He is actually who I would compare Orgeron to and not archer. Can recruit , bring energy, but only as good as his coordinators. We will see how it plays out. People always point to tepper as dinardos demise, but defense was ok in 99( horrible in 98). Morris watts left in 99 and man was our offense terrible that year.one bad year of defense and one bad year of offense = Fired.
