Dirt may be cheap, good soil is worth every penny.

Scrape your existing top soil back into a pile out of the way then spread cheap fill dirt "clay" to within 2 inches of the desired grade. Then re-spread your pile of topsoil to finish grade. Level with a dirt drag and re-seed.
I did that to my yard at the beginning of last summer and by the end of that summer you couldn't tell it was done.
