A major multi-modal transportation project in St James or other river parish between New Orleans & Baton Rouge, including a new airport serving both cities (passenger plus cargo), rail & interstate access and a deep water port has been proposed several times.
Not enough pockets were lined to make it a reality.

Yes, as well as building an airport in East New Orleans. I think the current location as about as good as you can get. One of the things that makes NOLA great is all you need is the 20 minute ride from the airport and you're in the heart of the city. Regardless of the reasons, I am glad it is staying where it is. Just need to streamline governance.
If it were in St. James or Ascension with a 50 minute drive to the CBD that wouldn't be good for anyone (not in STJ or AP).

I thought the that a mid point to BR airport may be a good idea in the past, but not so much now. First off MSY already gets 80% of flights in the state, and moving closer to BTR probably wouldn't make much of a difference. Also MSY is the major airport for the entire gulf coast region, not just southeast La. If you move it further west, you are also moving it further away from places like gulfport/biloxi, mobile, and even pensacola who also use MSY as their primary airport.
