Can you talk me out of thinking Dan Mullen wouldn't be a bad choice?

Considering what he's done at Miss. St. and the recruiting ceiling he has there in the middle of the woods? There was a short time where he had Mississippi St. as the #1 ranked team in the country. That's not necessarily an easy job considering, it's Miss. St. I wouldn't necessarily think I'd be unhappy with that hire.

If Herman or Jimbo falls through, thoughts and why do you think he's not a very good choice?

I downvoted my own post before a lot of you will, so I already took care of it for you guys.

He's one hell of a double.

But we are swinging for the fences here, and this ain't the instructional league.

I wouldn't be upset about it. I would be more for it if you could promise me Ed O, Aranda and Raymond would be on staff.

Can you talk me into believing Mullen would be a better choice than Orgeron?

Right now I'm not really in favor of keeping O at HC either, unless he sets the world on fire this year.

he'd have to give up those yeezy's so that is a tough proposition for him to face.

Mullen coached under Meyer longer than Herman. There is a reason Meyer kept him around so long. The guy is a good coach, he's just stuck at Miss State. The question is why hasn't he moved on. No other school has offered him a job.

He got hired at state because he had Tebow and he still has a job at state because of Dak. He hasn't done anything worth while at state before and now after Dak. So no I don't want him.

While we could certainly do worse, we could certainly do better. He had one good year with a bunch of seniors and Dak. The rest has been mediocre - bad. Hasn't shown that he can maintain success. Granted this is Moo State, there's only so much you can realistically accomplish there so you can cut him some slack because of that.

But still, they're back in the cellar now so thats a red flag. If we land him that means we had to settle for an option that was way down the line.

my thoughts on Mullen

quote:

people laud the guy for not being completely terrible at MSU but not really being very good either. MSU is far from a great job but due to being in a premier conference they have a ton more in money and resources than they once had. So sure in comparison to the school's history he has done well. Still being mediocre isn't all that impressive either.

Look at that schedule, getting to 7 wins isn't that big of deal.

Mullen play calling can get predictable.

quote:

What baffles me and the question I want to ask is how many failed attempts does it take to realize something just isn't going to work? Bama stuffed that play more often than not last season and they were stuffing it Saturday. But Mullen had to keep trying it because it has been successful against other teams.

sound familiar?

Also the guy currently makes 4.8 million a year. He isn't taking a paycut to move so we really want to pay 5 million + a year for Dan Mullen?

Dak doing so well in the pros & MSU struggling this year hurts his prospects right now. Although, he did have 3 winning seasons before Dak became the starter in 2013. I personally think he has done a great job. He has so many disadvantages compared to the other teams in the division. Plus, he had to deal with Ole Miss buying recruits in his own state.

I would like to know Urban's thoughts on Mullen & Herman

No, but I don't think LSU is looking for someone who's "not bad". If so, shame on us.

A. He only has a winning record against 2 SEC West teams Ole Miss (4-3) and Ark (4-3), soon to be no SEC West teams after this season

B. His records are ALWAYS bolstered by the fact they routinely play the WORST non-conf. schedule in the SEC. In 8 years, MSU has played exactly ONE (1) ranked OOC opponent in the regular season. ONE! It also doesn't hurt when your cross-division rival is Kentucky (whom he hasn't lost to)

C. He's had ONE winning conf. record in 8 years.

The planets aligned for MSU in 2014. In addition to racking up 4 wins against powerhouses such as S. Miss, UAB, S. Alabama, UT-Martin, he scored to "HUGE" SEC wins against UK and Vandy along with beating a 2-6 Ark. team, a 3-5 A&M team, and the worst LSU team since 2008. His best win was against a 4-4 Auburn team.

It's been 8 years. He's still at MSU for a reason. Sure he's done better than Sylvester Croom, but is that what LSU wants? Someone who is better than Croom? Hell, he's not even the best coach in the state of Mississippi. If we are going to get someone from MS, get Hugh Freeze. He's 3-1 vs. Mullen and 2-2 against Saban.

Thanks, but no thanks Dan. We've already had a coach who was "almost" good at a lesser SEC program (Dinardo)

I think he'd be a solid hire. I don't understand all the hate thrown his way. He's done a great job at State and one would think, with the resources LSU could provide him, he'd do an even better here.

And the guy is from the Meyer coaching tree that everyone seems to be enamored with.

No, but have a downvote for thinking this.
