Got a quote today from firestone saying it'll be around 750.00 to replace the fan clutch. Looked up the part on rock auto and found it on amazon for 125 delivered overnight. Deciding to replace it myself, what am I in for? 02 trailblazer.

Don't know the specifics of your vehicle, but a lot of times a fairly simple repair is very labor intensive because it's hard to get to without taking a bunch of other shite apart.

It can't be that hard. I had a 96 S-Class two years ago and some hick shop replaced the fan clutch, but they put it on backwards. Needless to say they didn't charge me.

It's four small bolts on every GM vehicle that I've ever owned.

Pop hood, remove clips in fan shroud, disconnect sensor connector, use pipe wrench and hammer to loosen nut on old clutch going to water pump, unbolt fan from old clutch. Reverse to install. Drink a cold beer or six.

the only special tool you may need is a "Strap wrench" which is a length of belt that tightens around a round surface and holds it still. Unless you can take it off with the Serpentine in place then that tool isn't needed. I just remember needing it on my Dodge.

I am guessing it will be a pain in the arse, as everything is covered and hard to deal with in that area...but to save $750, I would give it a shot.

if its a late model gm you will have to have a huge wrench to knock lose the self tightening clutch nut. after that its cake.
might have to take the fan shroud lose or if its a split style the upper half lose.

If it still has the original water pump, I would go ahead and replace it while you have everything opened up. It isn't that much more work.

Is this a 4.2L?
A good OE fan clutch should not be no more than $150. A good after-market fan clutch is probably no more than $100.
Does this include a good serpentine belt like a Gates brand or even an AC Delco belt?
Some of these places are notorious about marking up parts extremely high.
How many labor hours did they quote you?
A lot depends on engine size, 2wd or 4WD, and access to the fan clutch.
Youtube it, it may not be as hard as you think.

Order the fan tool off amazon. Other than that it's easy.
