Exactly. Irish doesn't know what he's talking about. Being one year removed from tiger band and working in Baton Rouge has its perks. One, I actually still know people who are in tiger band so I actually have an idea of what's going on and two, I'm able to stop by rehearsals and see what's going on.

They play louder and with attitude

They were loud. I'll give them that, but they're a bit too DCI for my taste. I've never seen another band come to Tiger Stadium and bring so much paraphernalia with them....xylophones, keyboards, drum sets, etc. I loved their sound though and their director seems to be a class act. Another thing I noticed is that they rarely if ever played while Tiger Band was playing, unlike the Bama and Auburn bands who deliberately play over us. All that said, nobody is better than TGBFTL at crowd interaction, and as far as I'm concerned, that's a college marching band's most important role at a football game.

The JSU show is NOTHING like current/modern DCI. LSU seems to be stepping back to the 70's with that pageantry stuff.
Not enough time in the College week to produce a current DCI "Artsy Fartsy Marching Broadway Theater" type show.

It would take much more practice time; at least 5 days a week for 3 hours a day, plus the Saturday "Clean" practice. (Can't take Monday's completely off either)

As well, that type of show would not translate well to a Tiger Stadium crowd.

Still too early to tell about Llinas, as that wasn't a normal half-time show.

Did see a lot of execution problems and things that nobody would recognize except experienced marching band people.

BTW, the "Xylophone Section" (Melodic Percussion) is comprised of Xylophones, Vibraphones and Marimba's and is called "The Pit." Haven't checked but most of the SEC Marching Bands have Melodic Percussion Pits. LSU is one of the few that don't. No reason not to have one. Just have to have "The Want" to do it like everybody else............

Did Tiger Band even play in the stands? I heard "Hey Baby" but nothing else except the canned music.

Multiple times they were getting ready to play, only to have the canned music start blasting. I don't think I've been to an LSU game that featured as much canned music.

Too bad there is not another Bill Swor roaming around out there somewhere for us but here's hoping the new guy gets it done.

From the stands, the Golden Band from Tigerland also played a tastefully beautiful melody of such classics from KC and the Sunshine Band as Shake Your Booty and I'm Your Boogie Man. Made me rather misty-eyed for my younger days.

I'm a "regular fan". No band experience, just enjoy watching them at the games.

I thought the band yesterday we as great (LSU's). It did look a little thinner in ranks than previous years, by I thought the show was good. Especially for one performed on relatively short notice.

JSU band was louder, but I prefer the style of LSU in terms of overall performance. The JSU band casually walked onti the field and git in formation. My 11 year old daughter thought that was strange, since she is used to seeing LSU March onto the field in formation.

One thing I always notice is the perpetual inability of LSUs band to march in a straight line. Last night I actually saw straight lines as the band crossed over the yard lines. It wasn't 100% perfect, but it was markedly improved from years past.

After one game, I would say it looks like the band is going to be just fine.

You have to ask yourself....
Why does a school as small as JSU have a band of 550 while LSU, a school of over 30,000 have a much smaller band
I don't care.

Saw that and several other glaring pregame errors. This is one reason that current members were telling their parents and friends how unprepared they were for this performance. I truly love the band members and honor what they are trying to do, but the leadership is horrible.

What the hell are you talking about.

So their camp began after the flood or did they just tack on the honor the flood victims to a show already planned?

Same music...actually, the original show was called a tribute to New Orleans. They stuck Amazing Grace (which had been done previously for two 9-11 tribute shows) to the beginning. VERY simple drill (high school caliber, maybe).

It's official. You're an idiot.

Seriously. I feel for the people who were there last night. I intentionally listened to the Blair call of the game for a few minutes, and the rap snippets being played between downs on defense was so loud, Blair was having to yell and it was still overpowering him.

This. I listened to the radio broadcast all game and was thinking "I feel sorry for whoever is within 40 yards of that". It sounded ear splitting; it must make it hard to enjoy the game.

I thought both bands did a hell of a good job last night...I totally enjoyed both performances.

It was annoying as hell. As I said, there were several occasions where the LSU band was about to play but they were drowned out by the obnoxious rap garbage that passes for music.

Here's the thing though: they're held to that standard. LSU doesn't try to be great at halftime shows. They're not held to that standard. Of course I'd argue a majority of the time practicing is spent on Pregame, that being the most important thing that all fans actually care about, but still. These are kids that are capable of doing everything JSU did besides volume just due to numbers. Tiger Band has, in my experience, just been held to a relatively lazy standard.

It didn't used to be that way, though.

Under Dr. Rouse the band was loud and played all game long. Also, there was emphasis on marching. If you couldn't march, you couldn't be in the band.

One of the qualifications to march was to put a spoon in your mouth, put an egg in it, and march. You could hold the egg when you turned, but you couldn't let it drop while marching straight ahead.

The thing that I find unacceptable is the crooked lines I see at halftime. You never saw that when Dr. Rouse was there.

Saying the band took several steps back with Roy King in charge would be an understatement.

Yeah this week's show is really exempt from criticism, I'm mostly talking about the band as a whole over the last 5+ years.

That is because there wasn't enough time allotted to march onto the field. At home games where JSU has the full time, they march on.
