Been thinking about getting an African Grey or some type of parrot... I've heard they are disgusting though. What are some drawbacks of having a bird? I know they live forever, so I guess one of these days my kid will take him/her.
Would you get one as a baby, or as young as you can or get an adult?

My MIL has a couple, they are loud as frick. Not all of them like people and some of them like only certain people and hate others. If they don't like people, they can bite hard and be real assholes. My son wants one, I tell him frick no.

My parents have had a yellow nape Amazon for probably 30 years. He's cool, but he only likes my dad. He isn't excessively loud, but he gets after it in the mornings. He used to talk much more than he does now. He immigrated to my grandma's because her dog died and she needed the company.
Pros: birds are cool, they talk, very friendly if you become their person.
Cons: mean as shite if they don't like you, annoying at times, and they absolutely refuse to die.

My dad had some kind of green parrot. It was big and mean as shite. It would honeydick you into trying to pick it up and then bite you as hard as it could. He accidentally killed it after cleaning a pistol in his home office where he kept this big stupid fake tree for the bird to shite all over. I guess the fumes got it. I hear they are sensitive to solvents and self cleaning ovens.
I felt bad for the bird, seems like a shitty way to go but I don't miss that a-hole one bit.

My nanny has a green one. 21 years old. Still remembers my name when I go over there. Yells my name like my mom used to when I was being a little shite.

What did you expect? A wild bird in a cage shitting and screaming daily. There is ZERO upside, none!
It will get out at some point.
Seriously, this has to be a troll if you are honestly considering. Unless you sail around looking for loot.

not a troll, was just curious, I dont know anyone with one and havent been around them, but they seem pretty cool and smart. I think the disgusting part may outweigh that though...

This is pretty spot on. I worked in pet shops through high school and collage and we sold birds so I have sorta had them around for a long time. We sold some of those kinds of parrots and what wick said is pretty accurate, but its not all bad.
I wouldn't say no and think its just all bad. If you get a good parrot from young and put in the effort you can have a really cool bird that speaks pretty clear. Sometimes they are just picky assholes but I have seen many nice ones. Keep up on the mess and it wont be a mess...you will have to clean.
With that said I have been bite me on my finger when going to pick it up...im sure it was a warning shot and it had some power. African grays have a really good vocabulary.

I had one growing up. One of the best pets i've ever had. It's a typical pet...eats, sleeps and shits. Only real difference it shits where it lives.
It whistled songs, repeated what it was taught and what it heard enough...like cuss words, etc. Sat in the palm of my hand and let me pet its stomach, etc.
DO NOT feed them sunflower seeds in their seed mix. Sunflower seeds are like crack to them and they'll throw all the other food all over the place digging for sunflower seeds

I have seen many people have them and really enjoy them, but some have not. It depends if its in your wheelhouse to be involved with that kind of pet.

My fatass neighbor has a bird he calls "pretty bird". Not sure what's more annoying, the bird chirping or him talking to it.
Eta: There was a gang of parrots that lived on this cell phone tower by my house. Always squawking, shitting, and chewing shite up. I shot one with a BB gun, and I swear he tried to kill me. Switched to a pellet gun, and with the help of this hawk that also lives by me, they moved on.

Pros: An opportunity to put your carpentry skills to the test building a grand outdoor bird enclosure.
Cons: Looks like most have been listed already.

Quaker parrots are all over NO and Metairie. If there is a large palm tree, it will have parrots in it. There were hundreds in the palms on Jefferson Ave before they cut them down. There is a very large nest (probably 10' tall) on the antenna of the blind reading radio station on magazine.
I had a canary as a kid. It was my cousin's pet for years before I got it. It was at least 20 yrs old when it died. Mine made noise all night and shite all day.
