Alamo Bowl: Five Questions
By Robert Allen
Date: Dec 30, 2004
Robert Allen explains what happened to the Cowboys in the 33-7 loss to Ohio State in Wednesday night's Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.
Where does the situation with Les Miles and LSU stand?
I spoke with Miles and with his wife Kathy. Both insisted that Les was not going anywhere. Miles said he is the head coach at Oklahoma State and will continue to be the head coach at Oklahoma State for a long time. He even joked when told of the stories that he was going to interview with LSU.
“If I were hiring, after that game (Alamo Bowl), I wouldn’t talk to me,” joked Miles.
The Cowboys head coach said he is not scheduled to talk to anyone at LSU and doesn’t plan on talking to anyone from LSU. He is committed to continuing to build the program at Oklahoma State.“We’ll be back next year going to a fourth bowl game,” said Kathy Miles. “I don’t plan on being anywhere other than Stillwater.”
Things could change, but Miles is not a liar. He’s played the media pretty good on this, and the attention doesn’t hurt him, in fact, it helps him. It could help in getting his most coveted facility for the program, an indoor practice facility. It could also help in recruiting as OSU is battling LSU for several key prospects including Houston Westside standout R.J. Jackson, Dallas Kimball defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger and Tyler Lee offensive lineman Ciron Black.

Miles had not received an offer from LSU on Dec 30, 2004

keep in mind that T Boone Pickens did not like Miles (Miles was resistant to Pickens influence on the program) and T Boone Pickens loved Gundy (a HC he knew he could control with his wallet) so once Pickens said it was ok to let Miles go to LSU, as far as OSU was concerned it was over with anyway.
Pickens donated $70mm in 2003 but he donated $165mm on December 30, 2005 but it was placed in a hedge fund that Pickens controlled through his BP Capital Management.

As I said he did not have an offer from LSU until either Jan. 1 or Jan. 2. Most likely the formal offer was made on Jan. 2. On Dec. 30 he did not have an offer. He had talked with LSU, but there was no offer on the table. He left San Antonio on Dec. 31. There was no offer on the table. Sometime on Dec. 31, after he returned to Stillwater, or Jan. 1 LSU called and arranged for Miles to come to Baton Rouge for a formal interview. He had not met the chancellor or talked with him before that point in a formal interview. From what the news reports were, it is likely that he knew an offer was likely assuming the interview with the chancellor went as expected, but he did not receive a formal offer until the chancellor met him and gave his approval on Jan. 2. The announcement was made on Jan. 3.
Prior to Jan. 1 or 2, Miles did not have an offer from LSU and he was, as far a he knew still going to be the coach at OSU until not earlier than Dec. 31. When the article published on Dec. 30 was written, Miles had no offer. It is as simple as that.

Pitiful Wolverine. Notice he said he "plans" to be in Stillwater. Not "I'm going to be in Stillwater next year."
It has been a while since your team looked for a coach.

What's really funny is that Ohio St. was in the Alamo Bowl.
