Gar especially alligator gar generally don't feed on game fish - the like the fish like shad that hit open water.

i have gar in my pond. saw them trolling the shallow water almost mid day last weekend. i want to catch them but dont know how.
I also have a TON of shad in the pond.... like too many. I can pull in cast net full of 2-8" shad..... idk if that is good or bad.

Use the shad as bait? That's what they're eating
Or just throw a stickbait/broke back minnow. Gar are caught in the top of the water column typically. They come up for air and will react to basically anything moving on the surface from my experience

Toss a cast net if you really want him out.

I was diving on The Tennessee River, and had a net bag around my neck ,half full of mussels, probably about 30 LBS. I was in about 9 feet of water, crawling along the bottom in some grass, and he was just laying there, and I didn't see him.
he got his snout caught in my bag and started fighting,he knocked my regulator out of my mouth, and knocked off my brand new mask, that thing cost about 75 bucks at the time.
He was a big gar and was beating the hell out of me,and I took some water. I dropped my weight belt, and tried to get the bag off of me,but he was twisting and fighting, and twisting the rope handle of the bag around my neck.
I managed to get back up and get to the ladder of my boat and got in, he was still beating the shite out of me,but once I was in the boat,he died a very bloody death.
I lost my brand new mask though.

I bet you don't put that mesh back around your neck anymore, do you.

I don't do that work anymore, but I really miss making a living that way. I did change to the smaller hole bags, that were kind of like the old mesh jerseys, but they ripped easy on rocks and roots and stuff, and had to patch them every damn day.

I always liked gar fishing as a kid. Got the blood flowing. You were top water fishing and pulling in a fish with big ole teeth.

Grew up in Vidalia, LA. We used to catch lots of gar in the bar pits along the river. My dad always had us pull them up to the side of the boat where he knocked them in the head with a paddle. He'd put on his gloves and break their snouts off. He took them to someone that ate them.

I have caught a ton on unintentional gar in the Pierre part area fly fishing with a bream killer fly. The either hit the fly or the float

Anybody wanting to get rid of some gar, send them to me. Love some gar boulettes.

I never saw one that big where we were fishing. The biggest ones we caught were maybe three or four inches longer than that one's head.

6'1" and at least 100lbs. We had a tape but no scale. That that dude was heavy. Alot of roasts came off of him.

That article reads like the beginning of a bad horror movie. Introducing giant prehistoric alligator fish to a new ecosystem...what could go wrong?

Put a bigger shad on a treble hook about a foot under a cork. Let them run with it for awhile. I've caught a few this way

The biggest I've caught was around 25 lbs but I used a 3-4" piece of cut up white trout.
The size probably doesn't matter too much as all long it's not way too big.
