Lightning instantly superheats the creosote, blowing the light pole apart. The same thing can happen with pine trees.

it does go ground up...lightning follows the path created by step leaders which come from ground...mulitple step leaders are generated in the area of a ground strike and the lightning follows the best path to ground. I know this because I got lit up by one one evening in my shop and wanted to know more about it. My entire shop door lit up in ST elmo's fire and a step leader jumped off this metal guard pylon I have outside my shop doors. Fortunately for me the lightning struck a tree about 100 yards away instead of that pylon because I was only about 10 ft. away from the leader. I still took a serious jolt, will never forget it.

Eh?

Cloud to ground is possible....but it is typically due to man made situations.

Cloud flash, feeder bands spread out in all directions ionizing as they go, then when one hits the earth the back strike occurs from earth along the ionized path

I am just happy that the OT knows it is lightning and not lightening.
