If I were given to speculation about what happened, I would guess that Miles got a call from the President of The University of Michigan, a callyou don't lightly decline, no matter who you are, and she made a pitch to try and get him back in the game. I would guess he listened politely, thanked her for the high compliment of wanting him, and expressed his feelings that in other circumstances he would be inclined to consider the opportunity quite seriously. I would speculate, however, that he made it clear that he had made a commitment to LSU that, as a man of integrity he wouldn't renege on, and that, in any event, he loves his current job, he hasn't nearly done all the things he wants to do at LSU, and that he isn't a candidate for the MIchigan position. I would guess that, finally, he offered to be of whatever assistance he could in Michigan's hunt for the best possible person to take the reins in Ann Arbor. And if he said all of that, I have no problem with any of it, nor should any other rational person.

The previous posts have this exactly correct. The yahoos in Michigan are the ones who ginned this thing up because their vanity has been hurt. Actually, Miles handled all of this just right.
