Please do not catch virtual monsters among the graves of fallen soldiers.

This is the message from authorities at Arlington National Cemetery, aimed at those who might use the hit mobile game Pokémon Go at the cemetery.

"Out of respect for all those interred at Arlington National Cemetery, we require the highest level of decorum from our guests and visitors," cemetery officials said in a statement. "Playing games such as 'Pokémon Go' on these hallowed grounds would not be deemed appropriate. We request that visitors to ANC refrain from such activity."

For those players who might get their news from Twitter, they followed up the statement with a tweet.

quote:

According to the Washington Post, the U.S. Holocaust Museum is trying to get game developer Niantic Labs to remove the landmark from the game. The director of communications for the museum, Andrew Hollinger, tells NPR in an email:

"Playing Pokémon Go in a memorial dedicated to the victims of Nazism is extremely inappropriate. We are attempting to have the Museum removed from the game.
"Technology can be an important learning tool, but this game falls far outside of our educational and memorial mission."

It is pretty sad that this even has to be a story. I'm a pretty quiet person, but I may say something if I saw someone playing Pokemon Go next to Audie Murphy's grave.

Meh, if a rare Pokemon that I want is in that cemetery, I'm going in to catch them.

I bet it's just full of ghastly and haunters tho.

The real question is, are you an a-hole for being on your phone in a place like that anyway?

You never know though. You may just get a person here or there that goes there to get Poke'mon and actually end up learning a thing or two about the places - the history, loss and sacrifice they represent.

This is Ingress fault, we submitted all those portals that turned into Pokemon GO sites. Ingress players typically are more respectful and in much smaller numbers than Pokemoners.

Cemeteries make great ingress portals. They are typically closed at night and so are considered secure portals to try to field from when no one can go attack them without trespassing.

So with this logic, it'd be OK for a kid to bring a iPad to their grandparent's funeral and play a geography game because the kid might learn where Madagascar is as that's where the wood from the casket was sourced?

You better not have kids.

There are absolutes in the world and people need to abide by them.

A military cemetery or a Holocaust museum are not appropriate places for geocaching games.

Kids who have electronic devices in their hands could easily try and catch a Pokemon right in front of or just out of their parents peripheral vision.

The two situations are not comparable IMO. Unless your local funeral home somehow has Madagascar information electronically imbedded there.

Though I guess by definition a cruise ship would come back sooner rather than later.

They could put some on satellites in orbit or the moon or something and tell kids "time to start studying up on your math and science classes"
