If you are determined to buy used, buy used. It isn't the best decision for trucks and it hasn't been smart in 10-15 years, but people still do it.
I'm not. Just trying to educate myself.

It doesn't make sense anymore though when a new truck is $42,000 off the lot and a couple of years used one with 50,000 miles on it is $38,000. That's not a good deal.
I would agree but is that the case though? Whatever package/trim level you're getting for $42k off the lot, you can find a couple years used with 50,000 miles for closer to $30k than $38k.
Let's say $32k. Now I'm not saying that's a "better deal" than brand new $42k given you need to account for wear and tear, fewer/older features, less warranty, etc. But you're still saving $10k.

Aok.
Long story short, the sweet spot is to buy a 2016 when the 2017s start rolling out.
In addition, used trucks, especially 1-2 years old, retain too high of a value relative to new.
Research price closely and you'll see what everyone is talking about.

You are saving 30% by accepting a truck that by traditional standards is considered 50% of the way to being worn out and is literally 50% (or more) through it warranty, has had god knows what done to it by its former owner, could have been flooded given our locations, and lacks upgrades the model has had in the intervening time. And that's IF you could get a loaded 2 year old truck with 50K or less on the odo for only $32K, which is lower than I bet it would be.

Right freaking now. Covert GMC here in Austin is offering $14,444 off of MSRP on the '16s. Right on the front page of their website.

So let's talk about F250 or 2500 crew cab 4x4 short bed. What are some good numbers and I'm not interested in oil field used. I've driven a dozen trucks all makes and models and have enough info on a half ton. I've had 4 3/4 tons in a row - 2 Ford Diesels, 1 gmc diesel and current Chevy gas.
Let's see where the conventional wisdom is on this.

You should be able to get a really good deal on the 2016 Fords soon as the redesigned 17 is about to hit the lots.

On vehicles I'm going to keep a long time (4-6 years), I buy "back". That is, buy a '16 when the 17s are out, assuming no model change.
On vehicles I'm only going to keep 1-3 years, I buy forward. Current model year, just about as soon as I can get them.

You can easily get 7-$10K off a 2016 Ford diesel.
The longer you wait, the more you'll save.
I'm looking at the 2017's, but they won't deliver until NOV-DEC. I've gotta take possession before 12/31.

When is the best time to buy back a model? November-December? Do ford and gmc release new models around the same time?

Don't let discount off of MSRP make a decision for you. They tack on thousands and then discount thousands to make you think it's a good deal.

Yes.
And the Chevy gas 2500 is comparatively very cheap. It's basically the same cost as a 1500. The numbers on that 6.0 motor belie its actual performance as a tow vehicle. It's no race car, but look up how it did the Ike Gauntlet. As it falls further and further behind on the raw HP & TQ numbers (which it outperforms) it is less attractive and they are charging less and less for it, particularly as rumors swirl that they'll change gas engines in the next couple of years.

That's a huge discount, and a good deal.

They used to, but they don't now.
There is some credence to end of the month rule.
If you're looking at a 2016, I'd wait until the 2017s are on the lot.
Timing is tricky though, b/c you may not get the color/options you want.

Just have to compare it to other dealers, with similar trucks.

My point is don't let them saying it's a huge discount make you think that's a good deal, it's an inflated number to start with, so it's not as good a deal as you think and there is more meat on the bone, probably a lot more.
They quoted me $13K off "MSRP" on my truck originally, and I ended up getting about $16.5K off "MSRP", and they still made about 3K on the deal. Lots of negotiation on trucks especially. I'm guessing on average Ford/dealer are still making 5-10K profit on each one they sell with the advertised discount.
Ultimately, if you feel it's a good deal for you, take it and be happy. The whole MSRP thing baffles me that people use that as a price point that has some relevance to the cost of the truck.

Regardless, it's an easy way to compare what one dealer is offering you vs another. It may be useless in establishing the actual value of the vehicle, but it is an easy way to compare offers.

Ultimately if people think they are getting a good deal, that's all that matters, and it provides profit to the manufacturer and dealer to keep operations going.
I liken it personally to how Kohls does their 30% off offers. People flock to that when they receive it, but when you do some research you will find that they inflated the normal sales price of the item by 30%, then give you 30% off, so you think it's a deal, but they are still making their normal margin on the item.

Neither if you expect your vehicles to last longer than it takes most buyers to pay for them. These are Fords, after all....
With that in mind, you'll probably find even more money off the sticker if you get a 2016 after the 2017s come out. The drawback is that you may have fewer options to choose from by then in inventory. If you are not picky about colors or trim, then go for the 2016 whenever they switch over to the 2017 models.
