Granted I live in Ohio. I put him in my top starting 5 of all time and people laugh but I can't imagine a better center if pick off a wall to play with me. So what say you?

I would say yes. But I'm biased.

Dream was incredible and often goes unmentioned when talking about the greatest players ever.

My second favorite player of all-time behind Jordan.

Unique skill set that hasn't been matched in the 20 years since his prime.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think most people would have him in or around their top 10 all time. Never thought of him as underrated.

Who the frick doesn't rate Olajuwon? Let me put it this way. Olajuwon was selected #1 overall in the 1984 NBA Draft ahead of Michael Jordan yet I never heard anybody criticize the Rockets for selecting Olajuwon over Jordan. That's how great Olajuwon was.

I think he's up there on the underrated all time greats.

Although it shouldn't, I have always felt that he was forever unfairly smeared or had a taint on his resume for losing back-to-back NCAA titles - especially to NC State (Houston was supposed to be unbeatable. They were 31-2 heading into the title game.)

Although Olajuwon is the last player from a losing side to win the 1983 NCAA Tournament Player of the Year award.

I feel like Olajuwon gets decent amounts of respect.

The guy I always thought deserved that title was Kevin McHale. Guy put up some very good numbers throughout his career. Just got overshadowed by Bird.

I'd easily put McHale as one of the top 50 players of all time.

Never really hear anyone talk about him though.

Underrated? Yes. Most underrated of all time? No. People within this thread seem to want to diminish Bill Russell, and suggest Olajuwon > Russell. All time, there's no way you can put Olajuwon before Russell. Russell was/is the benchmark for that position. Olajuwon was great for his time, no one can argue that, but I'd personally put Russell ahead of him. If anyone doubts how great Russell was, I'd suggest going back to YouTube and watching some of his highlights. That being said, Olajuwon is probably one of the best modern centers to play the game. The guy had incredible skill and I loved watching him play. Sad that players of his mold have disappeared in the current NBA.

I think he's overrated. But I know so little about him that I can't even hold a halfway decent conversation about him. He's underrated to me because I know he's better than I can give him credit for.

ETA: underrated. I'm an idiot.

Its weird, imo center really is the most stacked position of all time.

You have guys like, Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem, Russel, and Shaq who all have a legitamite arguement for being top 10 all time.

And then a tier below them you have David Robinson, Ewing, Moses Malone, Bill Walton,Robert Parish. Guys who are likely all top 50 all time.

Underrated?

Hakeem?

Naw. He is rated about right. Top-5 center. Behind Kareem, Shaq, Wilt.
