Is it fair that the coach of LSU men's golf makes more than the softball coach?

Chuck Winstead currently has a salary of $240,000 versus Beth Torino at $225,000.

I guess $15k is the cost associated with winning a national championship.

Is it fair Nikki Caldwell makes more than Beth Torino?

A legitimate question is why does Nikki Caldwell make more than either of them, let alone more than both of them combined.

Seems like way too much for both of them.

I'm not a pro Nikki guy here, but on what planet is a women's basketball coach at a major program paid less than a softball or golf coach?

It has nothing to do with fairness. You pay coaches comparable to others in their field. I'm sure their salaries are in line with other SEC coaches. Non-revenue sports aren't going to pay all that much. DD Breaux makes 175k.

This.

Comparing salaries of coaches in different sports is like comparing salaries of nurses and accountants.

Its a totally different field.

they are both top tier coaches in their sport

Idk what competitive salaries are in the respective sports but what we pay Beth has her here. What we pay Chuck has him here

When someone else ups the ante we will call or fold.
It has nothing to do with LSU liking chuck more than beth

I also imagine an NC bumps a salary to a certain amount based off of his contract, that language is in most coaching contracts I'm familiar with

Didn't he win a national title last year?

I don't see a problem here

They won the national title last year and finished tied for 5th this year. They'll likely be solid again next year. However, him and Torina making less than Fargas is ridiculous.

I'm sure softball cost the athletic department a lot more than golf last year, so sure why not.

market price for coach in each sport, but softbal is starting to generate more money & interest - she should get a bump or we have the chance of another school hiring her

I think it's fair...correct me if I am wrong - because of Title 9 doesn't the girls softball team members get full scholarships, whereas the men's golf team doesn't? If so, then I think it's much harder for the golf coach to attract and secure players on their own dime.

He's won a natty. She hasn't. And it's unlikely she will if she couldn't win it with the talent she had the last couple years. Might be a long time before we see a team as talented.
