But the channels are there. You're saying some contract provisio is triggered as soon as an otherwise empty open channel (specially designated as ESPN "alternate" mind you, and NEVER used for anything else) is put into use. That doesn't make a lot of sense and, at the very least, would seem a pretty easy thing to negotiate around.

No. There's a whole lot that goes into slot fees, ad revenue splits, etc.

Cox/Att/Dish/etc is going to want to be paid and ESPN can't justify having the channel open all the time.

It does seem odd that you would have a double-digit channel on your box (with my provider) that literally shows about 75 hours of content a year.

I don't think you get how this works

It's there for run over programming. You can't just go on an airplane and say oh I'm not paying for this seat, it was open anyway.
