Whether you hero worship Kyle or despise him, this is a good read from Sebastian Junger on the over valorizing of vets.

Have you ever read/seen Life of Pi?

What is better? The real story or the story that sounds better?

Reality is part interpretation and part realization and part visualization. I think therefore I am. Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. The Devil made me do it.

Many times they just have some ulterior motive, it's hard to deny that, but you have to be careful not to ignore the truth if/when it becomes available. Also, you are asking for it when you go public with a book like his. People are going to comb over it and verify the facts. This is the product of the attention that he so obviously wanted.

Probably because the person in question made millions of dollars and put himself in the public eye. You don't see people looking up the SEALs who have remained anonymous and just done their jobs.

Kyle was terrorist scum and he is heralded as some hero; one of those situations where people should hear the truth.

He's putting in work on this. It's almost like he's emotionally invested. I give it a 7.2/10.

I'll admit I'm a little jealous he was able to scam millions of blindly zealous and gullible people on the way to making a fortune.

It goes a little farther than embellishment. He was a liar. Plain and simple.

The Navy's DD214 which usually is an accurate source of info on medal counts for veterans disagrees

quote:

According to two current Navy officials, inaccurate information about Kyle’s awards is also contained in his separation document, known in the military as a DD214, which usually reflects a veteran’s official service record. Kyle’s DD214 form, which lists two Silver Stars and six Bronze Stars with Valor among his decorations, also differs from the number of Bronze Stars with Valor — five — that Kyle listed in his book.

Interesting article. Thanks for the link.

Also, sorry about the accidental down vote. I was trying to up vote on my phone and fricked up.

It's also possible that he was awarded some of the medals for operations that were classified and would result in a lack of paper trail.
