re: ideal 300 magnum

and the answer is that a .300 magnum is too much fricking gun for an antelope.

No it's not, I know several people who use 300 RUMs on antelope every year
Posted on 5/20/16 at 4:31 pm to The Silverback
So if I use a 470 nitro express for rabbits, is that ok, or maybe too much?

Hard to beat the win mag. Plenty of velocity to push up to 215 grains. I had one built with the throat longer than a saami throat and it pushes berger 215 hybrids about 2800 fps. Shoot it as far as you want, and don't have to worry about changing the barrel every 800 shots. Which ever caliber you choose call ptg to make you a custom tactical or competition reamer. It's a few hundred extra but well worth it. That way when you do have to replace the barrel the chamber will be exactly the same.

If you've never take a shot beyond 500 yards, you have zero chance of hitting anything at 1500 no matter what hardware you're holding.

Perhaps 'too much' is the wrong wording. But it is completely unneccessary and overkill.
300 win mag is too much, but if you just want something big, go for it. I think we would all love to see your 30-416 barrett.

And you sir, can go frick yourself. Your caliber threads are insults to physics.

I have been shooting 338 for a while now, but I do not have a 300 magnum cartridge. I am considering the 300 RUM, 300 Win Mag, 30-378, or taking the wild cat route.
Is .300 Weatherby off the table? I have no rational reason, but I love Weatherby.

If you are looking for long distance shooting then the 6.5 will have a much better ballistic coefficient than a .30. The lightest bullet that you would want to shoot out of a .300 mag is a 180 gr bullet. For a 150lbs animal that's overkill.
What you are talking about is suitable for an elk or moose. Animals much more substantial.
Your thread is bullshite. If you don't get that then no one here can help you.

I wanted to take a 408 CheyTac case or 416 Barrett case and neck it down to a .30.
What would be the bullet rise when it leaves the muzzle on a round like that?
And for the record your mechanic or machinist or gunsmith is not the person to ask about the plausibility of developing a rifle cartridge and doesn't give credibility to the idea. How many rounds has your gunsmith developed? Hell, how many rounds has he shot in the past month. Probably 0, because he fixes guns all day every day. The gunsmith at Jim's put someone's gas tube on their AR in upside down making it a single shot. He'd probably think it was a great idea too.
"the girl who made my banana split at Baskin Robins told me that'd be a killer round and it would totally work."

You're just made because it's beyond your understanding

The guy I talked to has developed several actually, and he is out of Montana. He builds custom rifles too and is well known on many long range shooting/hunting boards
His cartridges are ballisticslly insane and perform extremely well at long distances, not just for hunting but for pure accuracy at extended distances.

I'll take the 6.5 Allen Mag, 3700 FPS with 130s

If I could give you more than one upvote I would

I have an old 300 weatherby that I don't want to use for hunting. I like the 270 and 30-378 weatherby

I have a good friend who has been hunting antelope in NM for many years now and loves the 300 RUM, damage and what not has not been an issue.
Yes the 30-416 will take time and it may not work, but I'm interested to make it happen. Using the 408 case (technically a 505 Gibbs) is slightly more feasible but still seen as impractical by many. The 408 has an enormous case, but not as big as a 416 Barrett

For what? Your barrel would last 25 shots. There's a reason this stuff doesn't exist

This is the reasoning tpure looking for. Out of the thousands of rounds made...why has no one done this already?
